Hi and welcome to the return portion of my HA weekend trip - this time in Y.

My outbound report can be found below:

SFO-HNL on HA F http://flight-report.com/en/report-13433.html

As a Pualani PLT, I called within 72 hrs to see if there was any chance to upgrade to F using a complimentary upgrade. As it turned out, this flight was full and there was nothing available up to 4 hrs. before dept. I might as well take the opportunity to review HA's Y product to the mainland and find out how good it is.

We arrived at the airport 2 hrs before dept. and after dropping my family at the VX counter, I proceeded to the HA terminal. Once there, I waited at the Business line and noticed that the J and Premier counters were not staffed. I figured that an agent will come out in a few seconds but after a few minutes of waiting nothing happened. In the meantime, there were a few passengers behind me and they started to wonder too. One of them left and walked to the Y line. Right after that one of the agents at the Y counters waived me and checked me in with a smile. She quickly issued my boarding pass and sent me on my way to security.

There were several self service kiosks but nobody was using them.

As I entered the line for security, there was an uniformed agent with a sniffing dog. I think this is a pilot program at certain airports designed to expedite security without having passengers remove their shoes, emptying bags or going through dreaded pat downs. Indeed passing through security was quick and I was allowed to keep my shoes on.

Plumeria Lounge.

Next stop was HA's Plumeria Lounge. I have been curious about HA's lounge products (Plumeria and Premier) and this was the perfect opportunity to visit both. With my status, I was able to access the Premier lounge, but the Plumeria was only complimentary for Business passengers on international routes. However, any passengers flying on HA could gain access by paying a USD 40 (EUR 35,85) entrance fee. There is a sliding scale for elite members - Golds pay USD 35 (EUR 31,37) and Platinums USD 30 (EUR 26,89) respectively.

I was greeted by a friendly agent upon entering and after presenting my boarding pass and credit card, she invited me to sit down while she processed my entrance fee. A couple of minutes later she brought me my card and a receipt.

The Plumeria lounge was recently inaugurated in June 2015 and is approximately 3,000 sq feet - not really big for being a hub lounge. It has a very open feel lacking private partitions. There is a buffet counter in the back with manapua (Chinese pork bun or char siu bao), packaged snacks, miso soup powder, ramen bowls, sandwiches, wine, cookies and beverages. In addition there are toilets all the way in the back of the lounge.

There are disposable plastic plates and utensils (similar to the ones at the AA clubs) except for glasses next to the wine.

Premier Lounge.

I then explored the Premier Lounge located near gate 56. The agent was busy on the phone and when I presented my boarding pass showing my status she gestured me to come in. The lounge was crowded and only offered beverages and snack mix. I did not stay here for long and after a few minutes I was on my way to the gate.

Going to the gate, I had to place my belongings in an x-ray machine once again. I thought that this was redundant and some passengers were caught by surprise and annoyed by this.

I arrived at the gate just in time for boarding and inquired if there were any Extra Comfort seats available. When I checked in online, I opted to be placed on the standby list for one of these seats. The gate agent advised me that there were only middle seats left and I decided to stay where I was.

I gave my boarding pass to the friendly agent scanning the passes and followed the F pax. Upon boarding I was greeted by a smiling crew and quickly settled down.

Eventually my window seatmate arrived and it turned out to be a friendly and chatty senior citizen. As I found out later, he was someone closely connected to the fashion industry and used to be an executive at Saks Fifth Av. back in the 60's. We had a very enjoyable conversation about fashion and he gave me some "scoop" about personalities like Mme. Coco Chanel and Ralph Lauren.

Mr. F had a house in the Hamptons and as part of his yearly routine will fly to HNL and spend a whole month there at the Queen Kapiolani hotel (not precisely where I would picture him to stay). However, he was kind enough to give me a reference in order to get the best room of the house in case I would stay there. Out of curiosity I did a search for Mr. F. online and what he told me matched, so he is the real deal.

Moral of the story? Sometimes you meet the most fascinating people in the back of the "bus", as I always thought.

The flight looked full and soon we taxied out for departure. Mr. F. moved to the side and kindly allowed me to take these from his window.

After reaching cruising altitude the FA's started the service offering headsets along with other items for purchase. Movies are not free in the back so you must swipe your credit card if you want to see anything.

Only the following programs were complimentary:

A few minutes later the beverage cart rolled out.

Guava juice with Pau Hana snack mix.

Then came the meal service - HA is the only U.S. domestic carrier that still offers free meals in economy as part of its Hawaiian hospitality. It really makes them stand out against the competition. On top of that, one can request a free glass of wine along with the meal. Kudos to HA for going the extra mile.

Wine choices were Chardonnay or Merlot from Stone Cellars by Beringer Winery.

There was no choice of meal so the only option was sweet and sour chicken with pineapple, bell peppers and onions served with steamed rice with a side salad and coconut macaroon cookie.

The trip was uneventful and I spent a big amount of time talking with my neighbor. At one point I stood up to stretch my legs and went to the galley. There were three FA's there and my request for a glass of water was met with a smile followed by an offer for more after I finished with my glass. So far I have been impressed by the friendly and positive attitude of HA's crew which is one of its major assets.

Water was offered by the passing FA's during the flight and if you wanted something more you could always go back to the rear galley where the "Pau Hana" cart was available for snacks and miscellaneous purchases.

We arrived on time in SFO. The flight returning to SFO was shorter and it only lasted 4:08 hrs.

- BONUS -

We stayed in a condo in Waikiki and the views from the 36th floor were gorgeous. It had a fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator, stove, cooking utensils and chinaware.

Local food

"You don't need a silver fork to eat good food" - Paul Prudhomme

Not far from Waikiki, Kapahulu Av. has a few interesting places to sample local food. One of my favorites is Leonard's Bakery for their malasadas and believe it or not Safeway supermarket. As a matter of fact, my seatmate on the outbound flight was a local guy who suggested me to go there for their pokes. His advice was spot on. Safeway also has an assortment of local food products in addition to a decent salad and hot food buffet bar.

Few things can compare to a malasada that is freshly made and hot.

Safeway supermarket.

Ono Seafood

This little mom and pop place is reputed to have the freshest "poke" in the whole island. Basically poke is raw fish salad seasoned with soy sauce, green onions and sesame oil. There are variations that include dry chili pepper, limu (local seaweed) and other island ingredients. It was delicious.

Duke's Waikiki.

Considered one of the best buffet breakfasts in Waikiki, this open air beach side restaurant is very popular and the wait can be long, but the relaxing atmosphere and view of the beach (provided you get a good table) is unbeatable.

Buffet. Is it me or do you find it a bit offensive to have someone parading shirtless with a towel wrapped around the waist inside a buffet? I know the beach is nearby but still…

Conclusion

Flying on HA was a very enjoyable experience and I would not hesitate to do it again. From the friendly crew to the free meals in Y, this airline delivers true Hawaiian hospitality and is the best way to fly from the mainland to its home base of Hawaii. In this day and age, it is remarkable that a domestic carrier offers free meal in economy, let alone a glass of wine to accompany the meal. The inflight entertainment was very limited and you had to pay in order to access the movie selections.

The Plumeria lounge was cozy but small for being a hub lounge. The sitting arrangement is very open so there is a lack of privacy, but it never became full so it was enjoyable. Catering consists of snacks and food is limited to hot manapuas (pork buns) and sandwiches. The Premier lounge was disappointing with just snack mix and basic drinks, but the separate room for premier and elite members is appreciated.

We departed 18 minutes late and arrived 1 min. later at SFO.

Was there any interesting view through the windows behind the drapes in the Plumeria Lounge ? The setting is pleasant; as often, I would not pay the fee out of my pocket, but might be able to charge it on an expense account on a business trip (Assuming that I would have business in HNL, that is ^^). Paying for a lounge when you have free access to another one is quintessential lounge-geekness :)

Redundant security checks only make sense in countries where it can deter people from bribing a check exemption all the way to the plane. Apart from the inconvenience, I would feel more insecure, not less, at discovering that extra control.

I agree that you get make more interesting and friendly chance encounters in steerage class, on the average.

I do not car much for movies in flight, but being charged for that in economy is cheap. But then, there weren't even IFE screens on the 4h20' long URC-SHA Chinese domestic flight. The meal served on that flight was quite similar, by the way.

Thanks for the surfboard and food bonus, and for this comprehensive report !

Was there any interesting view through the windows behind the drapes in the Plumeria Lounge ?
      - There was a reason why those drapes were closed. Nothing of interest behind them except for a small road for internal vehicles.

Paying for a lounge when you have free access to another one is quintessential lounge-geekness :)
      - I suffer from many types of aviation related geekness. I need strong support group. :P

Redundant security checks only make sense in countries where it can deter people from bribing a check exemption all the way to the plane.
      - I am still perplexed by that extra security step. It could have been agricultural related, but that is just a guess. Maybe next time I'm there I can ask..or maybe not. ;)

I guess every airline is trying to maximize on ancillary fees and therefore IFE is charged.

Thank you Marathon for your visit and comments.

Great report, Jetsetpanda! Looks like you had a great trip in Hawaii, and nice to see photos of your travels. That poke dish you took a photo of looks amazing.

Hawaiian Airlines looks really nice, even in Economy. I'm impressed by the free meal served, and the free wine. Very nice!

Too bad you didn't get the upgrade for this return flight, but at least it was a day flight. A 2PM departure with an arrival at 8:30 is perfect. A red eye would have been more difficult.

I guess I got my answer to the lounge access question from the previous report. Not that it's anything exciting, but this is also more generous than other US carriers who only allow lounge access to Elites on international itineraries.

HA really does set itself apart from other US carriers in Y, but still offering full meals and alcohol. This is a good as it gets in domestic Y in the US!

Nice bonus pics. Great view from the condo.

    Thanks for sharing!

      - Couldn't ask for a better schedule.

Not that it's anything exciting, but this is also more generous than other US carriers who only allow lounge access to Elites on international itineraries.
      - While the Plumeria lounge is free for passengers flying J on intl. flights, I appreciate the fact that it allows entrance to any other HA passenger for a fee. The Premier lounge is free to elite members and in that regard it is generous in its admission, but it is very basic and can get crowded.

      - The free meal would have been enough to really set it apart from the rest, but free wine also? That was truly an extra that I did not expect. I guess HA believes that a glass of wine should always accompany a meal. :P

Nice bonus pics. Great view from the condo.
      - Too bad that I did not go to the beach. ;)

As always thank you Kevin for your support and comments.

The salad of the sandwiches doesn't look fresh on the buffet picture

Very poor offer in my opinion lol

The Premier lounge is even worse :(

The meal is decent even if not really appetizing (Does it really deserve 10 ?)

Being charged for IFE is very cheap

A pleasant neighbor and a great crew

All in all a good flight

    Nice gourmet bonus as usual

See you soon for another experience

The salad of the sandwiches doesn't look fresh on the buffet picture
      - I saw the attendant bring the tray from the back and place it on the buffet right after I entered. They were not sitting around if that is what you mean. ;)

Very poor offer in my opinion lol
      - It's lacking for being a hub lounge, but the effort is appreciated. Perhaps some modifications will take place as HA gains more international exposure.

The Premier lounge is even worse :(
      - It's basically an area to get away from the crowds, although it can get crowded at times defeating its purpose.

The meal is decent even if not really appetizing (Does it really deserve 10 ?)
      - In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king so they say. Even if the meal is not to your liking, you can drink away your disappointment with a glass of free wine. As I said before, to serve a meal and on top offer free wine is really outstanding for a domestic flight in Y. So yes, HA deserves a 10 for catering in my humble opinion. ;)

My next experience will be in Apr. when I fly SFO-MIA-LAX-SFO. I'm sure there will be a few transatlantic FR's during that month too, perhaps CDG-IAD? ;)

Thank you Gilbert for your comments and expert opinion as always.

I'm not sure that the Plumeria lounge is worth to be paid for, especially for Gold and Platinum members. That's non sense to ask top tier levels customers to pay to get in. So thank you for your financial sacrifice and duty as a Flight Reporter.

What such a nice flying mate is Mr F. I'm just surprised he didn't fly First Class.
But I can assure you Adan that some pax flying First Class are also very nice ;-)

Even though HA doesn't provide free entertainement onboard, passenger has at least a free meal. That makes HA a quite interesting airline to fly with.

Thank you for this report and for the very appetizing bonus.

      - If anything, they should offer free admission to top tier levels even when traveling in Y. Some sacrifices are worth making. ;)

What such a nice flying mate is Mr F. I'm just surprised he didn't fly First Class.
      - I have read once that it is more likely to encounter a millionaire shopping at Costco than any other establishment. Never judge a book by its cover (at least in the U.S.) ;)

the J and Premier counters were not staffed
    - Pretty poor display at their hub. I would have to think they would get a pretty constant flow of passengers through their check-in lines given the size of their operations. Korean as the only foreign language on the signage? Interesting choice. I would have guessed Japanese^^

Lounge round-up: My impressions are that the Plumeria has offerings comparable with most lounges in Japan. One or two small hot items and then instant noodles and packaged snacks. Given they are competing with real carriers they need a respectable offering. Having seen he KAL Lounge my last time through HNL, I would say this lounge is a lot bigger and has comparable food/drink offerings. The Premier looks like your standard domestic lounge with nothing but drinks and some packaged snacks.

Going to the gate, I had to place my belongings in an x-ray machine once again
    - I think I know what you are talking about. It's the separator between intra-Hawaiian and all other flights? I always thought that was just a customs control for fruits/meats. I don't ever remember actually having my stuff scanned.

Notice the signs at either side of the wall telling passengers not to cross to the other side in front of the bulkhead row.
    - And how many people disobeyed this notice?

Sometimes you meet the most fascinating people in the back of the bus, as I always thought.
    - And most of the time?

Not free IFE? That's some points deducted for HA.

Kudos to HA for going the extra mile.
    - You need to get some socks like the girl in this picture. Back to the catering. So you offer a free meal and glass of wine, but you charge for IFE? Anyways, the meal looks like a standard long-haul Y meal (maybe a little less underwhelming), but a free meal is a free meal and that's all that matters. Offering free wine is also a very nice gesture given that would run you $8 on a legacy.

    Safeway supermarket.
    - I think this is the first ever FR that has featured a grocery store in its bonus. Congratulations!

Great food filled bonus as always. I'm not much a fan of HNL, prefer the other islands for escaping the touristy crowds, but plenty to eat there^^

      - It's a strange choice. Perhaps it was for a ICN flight.

The Premier looks like your standard domestic lounge with nothing but drinks and some packaged snacks.
      - It can get extremely crowded and when it reaches that point it is better to just hang around at the gate.

I always thought that was just a customs control for fruits/meats.
      - That was my impression.

And how many people disobeyed this notice?

On such longish flight I'd rather have free IFE and be charged for the food....well go figure. I like how HA has designed its image and all, it doesn't seem so simple and boring as other US airlines.

HA really stands out compared to the other U.S. carriers.

Poke sort of reminds me of ceviche, only that it is dry and the other is wet. HNL had a laid back attitude and tropical climate, just like a lot of other coastal cities in Latin America. Sometimes we share more things in common than differences. ;)

Thank you for sharing this great FR with us! I guess I'm pretty late to the party.

    Nice spotting shots from HNL!

The cabin seems to be in pretty good condition upon boarding.

On one hand it's nice to offer decent PTV screens in Y but then they charge you for most of the content. Was there a moving map for free?

Free meals in Y is a big plus, another reason to fly with HA when possible.

Have a good one, see you!

There was a map available for free, which gave the IFE some redeeming quality. Free food in Y on a domestic U.S. flight is truly exceptional.
