The only airline in India with premium economy seats in India, yes it is "Vistara" the star airliner of India after the demise of Jet Airways. On a recent trip from Chennai to Delhi, I was lucky enough to try out their premium economy product.

While the difference between economy and premium economy is very less. The fare difference is only 1500rs(20USD) for 2000km Chennai <—> Delhi route and you will get more legroom, cushioned seat, and a separate cabin. While the food offered is virtually the same in the economy and premium economy, in premium economy food will be presented with a plate while the economy it will be presented in a box.

Background & Booking

Initially, I booked in economy class since fares were on a higher note on the day before my journey got an offer for an upgrade for 20USD. And I gladly took that opportunity.

Check-in

Reached airport by 5 AM and to my happiness, Vistara had a separate line for premium economy passengers and it was very smooth. Then comes the chaotic part of the journey clearing the security in Chennai Airport :(. Chennai Airport stands up top as one of the worst metro airports in India and this is one of the reasons. It took 50mins to clear security and it was managed very poorly. Boarding was already started by the time we reached Gate 2. There were two separate lanes for boarding but by the time we reached boarding for the economy class was already commenced. It was raining in Chennai but we were set to depart on time.

And here is our bird waiting to depart.

The Seat

Vistara UK 832
Chennai (MAA) – Delhi (DEL)
Friday, Septemeber 20
Depart: 6:55AM
Arrive: 9:40AM
Duration: 2hr45min
Aircraft: Airbus A320-200
Seat: 5F (Premium Economy)

Seat in Premium economy is in its mini-cabin, in a 3-3 configuration, Wait at my seat was a pillow and headrest was adjustable. Coming to the legroom it is 3inches higher than what you get in economy class. The seat was comfortable on the whole.

The seat does not have its own TV screen or individual power or USB outlet but vistara. But vistara provides IFE through vistara world app where you can watch movies, TV and live location while on-board aircraft.

Vistara does offer a meal experience in a premium economy, but I heard the meal offered is the same as what you get in the economy except for the presentation.

As boarding was completed, a Cold towel was offered which was a nice touch for a domestic flight. Later menu was handed over. Although blanket was not present in my seat, air hostess provided to some on a request basis.

We departed on time despite rains in chennai..

Legroom was impressive..

IN FLIGHT MENU

There were 3 options for this flight. 2 vegetarian and 1 non-vegetarian.

We chose the Mexican omelet and rava, which was served in plates and tray. The crew came around about 20 minutes into the flight, and everything was wrapped up about 45 minutes after that.

The food was really good and tastier. A small plate of fruits was provided. Then we had an option to select Starbucks tea or Juice. An overall pretty good meal for a domestic flight.

IFE

As I've mentioned before, the aircraft was equipped with the Vistara world which can be connected through the app or the browser. The IFE system is offered in Hindi and English languages. It had limited choices but more than suffice for a domestic flight.

The seat pocket content: Safety card, magazine and vistara world card

For the rest of the flight, I spent time watching the IFE

Landing

The landing was no-nonsense smooth and 5mins ahead of time at Delhi IGI Airport T3. T3 was mostly used by Air India in Delhi. And we received our bags from the belt in 20mins.

Conclusion

It was an enjoyable outing with Vistara, my only con would be Vistara could offer a different meal in premium economy. Still for 20$ its worth an upgrade while Staffs were good throughout the flight. Chennai Airport is horrible with regards to security clearance. Anyone taking morning flight between 4am to 8am try to reach the airport before 2.30hrs to avoid heckling at last minute. Delhi Airport was maintained pretty well maintained and there was a world of difference between chennai and delhi airport interms of maintenance and facilities. My return trip will be in Air India Economy class coming soon...
