Routing

Introduction

I spend the night at the Radisson Blue Hotel at Oslo Airport. Today I'm on my way to a business meeting in Haugesund (long story…). The flight is departing at 08h15. So I leave the hotel just after six, just so I still have enough time for breakfast in the lounge.

Check-in

I've already checked in online, but I still need to tag and drop off my suitcase, which is a fairly easy process at the airport's self-service machines.

SAS Domestic gold lounge

Security is a breeze. From there I head one floor up to the SAS domestic lounge. At Oslo, SAS operates a lounge in both the domestic and international sectors of the terminal.

I know it sounds like a total cliché, which it probably is, but the lounge just like an IKEA show room to me.

The lounge is very well appointed. There are even shower rooms that can be booked, although I don't try them. In addition, there are also small cubicles available to work in and make private phone calls.

There is a large buffet area with a large selection of cold dishes, butter, cheese, and jam. It's a nice selection and hits the spot nicely. I'm never quite sure what to expect on SAS, so it's best to make sure I have a decent breakfast in the lounge.

The brown stuff in the picture below is a Norwegian staple. I think it's cheese. It's just brown and has a slightly off, sweetish scent. It's an acquired taste…

Boarding

Just before 08h00 I leave the lounge and make my way to the gate on the C concourse.

Even though it's a busy flight this morning, boarding is quick and efficient.

The cabin & seat

I thought SAS had abolished empty middle seats. Much to my surprise though, the seat between me and the guy on 2D remains empty, as to all the other B and E seats on rows 1,2, and 3. I'm guessing that perhaps they'll do that if the flight is not completely full. But I'm not sure.

photo img_9041

The seat pitch is good on row 2. Every seat has it's own USB port.

It's still quite cold outside, but the sun is out, so it's a beautiful day for flying.

photo img_9042photo img_9043

We take off in a northerly direction and then make a left turn to point the aircraft in the general direction of the coast and Haugesund.

Breakfast

The flight time to Haugesund is forty minutes. Much to my surprise, a breakfast box is served on this flight.

photo img_9048photo img_9049

It consists of a salami and cheese sandwich…

photo img_9050

Strawberry yoghurt with granola…

photo img_9051

And a rather odd tasting fruit juice.

photo img_9052

With that, I ask for a coffee with milk and a bottle of water. I'm given a half litre, which is another welcome surprise.

photo img_9053

The journey to the coast takes us right over the mountain range that runs the length of Norway. It's still covered in a thick layer of snow. And from what I can tell from up above, most of the lakes are still frozen.

photo img_9054photo img_9056photo img_9057

Eventually, as we approach the coat, the snow subsides and gives way to a large expanse of forrest.

Arrival in haugesund

Our approach into Haugesund is just lovely, especially with the good weather.

The final approach brings us in low over the sea. And then we land.

As an added bonus, there are no airbridges in Haugesund, which means you get to take a close-up look of your aircraft as you disembark.

Conclusion

From the airport you can either take a taxi or a bus. However, the bus is very small. Furthermore, there is no regular schedule and busses are timed to the arrivals and departures of aircraft. As a result, it tends to get rather full.

Other than that, this was a nice flight with SAS. I think my only really issue with SAS is that I'm never really quite sure what to expect on short-haul, because it depends on so many variables. While I get the airline's need to be flexible, I'm not sure they're doing themselves any favours, mainly because, from the passenger's perspective, it makes them seem slightly unpredictable.

I'm guessing that perhaps they'll do that if the flight is not completely full. But I'm not sure.

I think that just happens naturally when a flight isn't completely full as there tends to be a lot of single travellers in SAS Plus. I've noticed a lot of empty seats as well on my flight in SAS Plus, but I always look at the live seat maps and they were never blocked by the airline.

Much to my surprise, a breakfast box is served on this flight.

As you mentioned service in SAS Plus is unpredictable. Sometimes you get a nice box like this and sometimes you get a boring little snack...you just never know haha

Our approach into Haugesund is just lovely, especially with the good weather.

Looks like you had perfect weather for it! Flying over Norway is always spectacular when it's clear

    Thanks for sharing!

Great flight report, now this is a SAS Plus experience I would be happy with, my SAS Plus flight from Helsinki to Copenhagen was a mediocre let down by comparison to this one!
