I won’t go into detail in my research for a meeting in Oslo, but it all boiled down to this:
• Norwegian arrived too late in OSL the day before
• Flying Lufthansa resulted in wasting an entire afternoon, or making it too late in OSL
• Air France was leaving OSL too early on the way back

Hence this SAS routing which was not ideal, since I had to either eat in CDG1 or buy on board on the way in, and the return trip included a 30’ layover in CPH on a Friday evening…
• CDG-OSL : SK834 14:05 – 16:20
• OSL – CPH : SK461 18:00 – 19:10 here
• CPH – CDG SK1563 19:40 – 21:40 there

… but the return trip did not happen exactly this way (teaser).

I would have liked to leave Paris early to do some tourism in OSL a zero marginal cost, but there was no single airline flight combination which made it possible.
I left by car to the airport somewhat early because
a) it was raining, which always slows down the traffic and increases the risk of an accident creating a traffic jam
b) I was concerned that there could be more security and ID checks of all kinds at the airport, although this was an intra-Schengen Zone flight. We were in mid-November 2015, and I had received during the previous week-end messages of concern and support from my friends living on both sides of the Pacific Ocean…

… and in particular from one of cities in the world which lit their iconic building with French colors as a gesture of support.

I received the day before, at ETD-22h, a reminder that I could use the OLCI. An hour or two later, there was still ample choice. Row 10 of SAS’ 738s does not have windows, and anyway I had no access to the rows forward, so I chose a window seat behind the wing, on the side opposite the sun direction. Note that SAS is just as superstitious as AF : there was no row 13.

I made it at half past noon in CDG and there were definitely no crowds there. There were nearly fewer passengers than soldiers in full gear patrolling slowly, widely spread from each other and stopping every ten-twenty meters to ostensibly look all around them.

I had left my FF card at home, and I did not understand that "Enter card manually” actually meant typing manually the card number. I sometimes have a hard time with the way the French use English.

The metal detector did not beep, but a security staff noticed a 100% plastic splint, and tapped it with cotton for explosive detection (there has been explosive shoes; why not an explosive splint too?)
It had been a very bad winter for a marathon runner, and this was the result of one of several ankle injuries which ruined my season (at time of posting, I resumed training, starting back from a humbling level after several months of forced rest).

Since I could claim to be (moderately) handicapped, and actually because the standard toilets were all occupied, I could legitimately use these toilets for handicapped passengers. Maybe out of coherence, the hand dryer was handicapped too, i.e. it was out of operation.

SAS adopted the design of a magazine pocket in the upper section of the seat, which leaves extra space underneath for the legs.

The seats can unfortunately recline, and using my laptop became impossible. I sat sideways, taking advantage of the absence of a passenger on the middle seat, but this was not very comfortable. The seat was also very hard, with an uncomfortable shape, or one which was not adapted to that of my body.

My neighbor went to the toilets, and since the rear of the aircraft was completely empty, I asked the FAs in the rear galley if I could change seat. No problem and I had a smile as a bonus.

The advantage of that corridor was that it was plane spotter-friendly, which is not common when deplaning. I saw a Norwegian 787 while taxiing, but I have pictures of 737s only.

Conclusion

Only because the low fill ration made it possible to change seat do I not penalize more the lack of comfort of the too hard seat and the nuisance of the reclining of the seat in front of me. The rather mediocre coffee deserved only half a point above average for catering. No newspapers or IFE, but an in-flight magazine which was marginally above the utterly uninteresting average. Only the FAs save the record of SAS, even though they had few opportunities of interaction with the passengers.

I expected trouble due to the state of emergency, but the fluidity of the controls in CDG1 was ideal. The accessibility of CDG is always hampered by the absence of a decent rail link, but at that time and for a short round trip, driving to the airport was a good option. A good point for the ground staff was courteously and efficiently changed my FF reference.

No special problem in OSL, and high level comfort of the Flytoget which reaches directly the city center.

    In Southern Asia, I know for a fact that Jet Airways, SpiceJet, Vistara and SriLankan Airlines do not use row number 13.

    I'm sorry to hear about your leg injury - I hope you make a speedy recovery!!

    The FedEx plane is actually a Boeing 777 Freighter - based on the concept of the passenger Boeing 777-200LR.

    Unfortunate to know about the uncomfortable cabin on the Boeing 737...but I guess there isn't much to expect on such low cost carriers anyway...

    Lucky you got a no-winglet B737-800! They are getting increasingly rare. And I remember, there was a time when I was unhappy about not getting a winglet B737-800 flight :P

      I did not know that airlines in this other part of the world also did not have a Row 13; thanks for the trivia information :)

      Medical recovery of such injuries is always boringly long (otherwise, it is not durable), and recovery of the previous athletic level even longer afterwards. C'est la vie (that's life)...

      Thanks for the correction about the Fedex aircraft - I had a doubt, actually.

      There was even a time when I felt lucky to have a winglet B737-800 :P

    - I've noticed that's pretty normal for DY's European arrivals into Scandinavian Airports. Flights from BOD, ORY, AMS, SXF, BCN, MAN and AMS arrive between 23:00 and 00:00 at ARN.

    Nice spotting shots at CDG despite the weather, not very nice for arriving tourists in Paris though.

    The cabins in DY's 737s are so much better than SK's tired-looking cabins.

      My uneducated guess is that DY's landing/departing slots are cheaper.

      This satellite at Terminal 1 offers a good view of the closest north runway, and is quite close to it. The only problem is that you need to stand up, because of the gradual frosting of the lower section of the window

    OSL is on my bucket list, but hopefully not in November^^ Reminds me of my trip to CPH the week before you took this one to OSL, too cold for me^^

    I don't think I have ever seen CDG look so empty on the inside, very eerie indeed.

    - For a 15 year old plane, it looks pretty good to me^^ The hard product doesn't look so LCC as SK has been leaning towards. A good seat pitch and a free drink is a free drink^^ Just remember that you are only allowed one free drink per meal on their long haul flights ;)

    The wingletless B738s are also present in the US, AS and WN both have some still floating around. They remind me of the old NH B735s^^

    Beautiful nighttime shots deplaning in OSL. I love the 4pm twilight.

    The train from OSL looks very similar to the Arlanda Express, hopefully also a fraction of the price^^

      - The weather is unfortunately never a parameter in scheduling my business trips ^^

      - The Flytoget costs 180 NOK ( ~181 SEK) to Oslo Sentral, versus 280 SEK one way / 540 SEK round trip for the Arlanda Express. Not what I would call cheap, but more reasonably priced.
