intorduction

Welcome to another trip report!
This is flight 2 of 3 from my starting point in Cancun to Denver via Mexico City & Atlanta. If you want to hear about the whole story of how this itinerary came to be I encourage you to read my previous report which you can find here. While on the tarmac on my AM flight, I managed to capture my 757 (not knowing at the time this would be my flight taking me up at ATL this afternoon). I initially only had 40 minutes to connect here in MEX and wasn't sure I would make the flight, especially since we were waiting on the tarmac for an additional 15 minutes or so for a gate to be open and available.

Mexico City airport (MEX)

As we pulled into the gate, our DL flight had already began boarding. Surprisingly a DL representative was at the end of the jet bridge holding a sign for 'ATL'. I asked her if we would still make it onto the flight and she told us to make a run for it as doors would be closing in 10 minutes. For the heck of it we arrived at gate 72 and our flight was departing out of gate 54 which was quite a distance.

boarding

After running through the terminal we finally made it to our gate with only minutes to spare.

Before reaching the non existent line I was approached by an airport official and did the usual questioning of 'did you pack your bags yourself?' before allowing me to scan my boarding pass and onto the flight.

Here is my beautiful Boeing 757-200 that will be taking me up to ATL this afternoon. This was a special 757 as it was delivered new to DL almost 32 years ago, making it older than me which is hard to usually say now in days ?. Unfortunately though, as of Nov. 2023 it has stopped commercial service and it is parked awaiting its future, most likely getting scrapped :(.

Some information about my plane:
Flight number: DL 587
Aircraft: Boeing 757-232
Registration: N670DN
Delivered: January 9, 1992
Age: 31.5 years

Nice to always see a PTV on your flight ?.

Legroom was pretty good, these seats offer 31" pitch. I still have the convenient pocket from Comfort+ where I stored my tickets and passport.

My awesome view for the next 2.5 hrs. I didn't realize it until I looked out my window that I was flying on a rare wingletless 757 which you almost don't see in 2023. It seems that DL never bothered installing winglets on this aircraft probably because of its age and close to retirement? ?‍♂️

Boarding was already completed shortly after I settled in but we waited for a few more minutes at the gate for some paperwork according to the captain. Today's flight load was full at around 95%. However I was one of the lucky ones to have the middle seat vacant which was a nice surprise. The very last person to board the flight took her seat in the aisle of my row.

inflight entertainment

It's not surprising that DL has one of the best IFE's in the skies, especially in the US. There are tons of TV shows and movies to keep you entertained.

photo tempimage3lprm9photo tempimagegigtc7photo tempimage632inc

My absolute favorite part though was the interactive map which I kept on throughout the flight.

inflight service

About 35 minutes into flight the FA's sprang into the cabin to begin the inflight service.

The FA serving my section during the service was very very friendly. While the other FA serving the other side of the cart was serving only one snack to everyone, my FA was giving everyone two snacks including me. When I asked her if it was possible to get a coke and a coffee she gladly gave them to me. Take note AA ?.

The snacks were a bag of pretzels and cinnamon cookies.

the loo

My neighbor on the aisle got up to use the loo so that's when I took the opportunity to go use it to check it out myself. I went to the loo closest to me which was in between comfort+ and right behind first class. Surprisingly the loo was kept tidy even towards the end of the flight.

Right as I got back to my seat, an FA came by through cabin to offer everyone a cup of water from a tray which was a nice gesture especially on a 2.5hr flight.

Conclusion

This was a great flight on DL for economy class standards. The FA's onboard were welcoming for the most part and provided great service throughout the flight. The cabin and IFE system were very comfortable and enjoyable to use which made the flight quite literally fly by. Only slight disappointment would have to be on the inflight service. DL should provide something more substantial on a 'international' flight, though all US carriers not just them treat Mexico and central American flights as regular domestic service which should change as fares in general to these destinations are substantially more expensive then domestic US flights. Therefore service should be held and be expected to a higher standard.

I love 757s! I was sad when AA retired them--they definitely still had some life left in them. One thing DL does super well is make an old plane look brand new on the inside. Their cabins are very nice, especially with the new bins and sidewalls--you'd think the plane was fresh out of a factory and not decades old.

Agree that the in flight service is a bit disappointing for a 3h international flight, but I guess at least it's a bit improved over standard Domestic service on a similar length flight. US carriers have become really good as lowering expectations on short-haul to near zero so I guess anything that's served is something, haha. I've flown this route on DL in F before (well I guess technically J since it's international) and it was fine, don't remember it being much better than standard Domestic F service on a 3h flight.

    Thanks for sharing!
