Hello all and welcome to my flight report.
This is a special report for me, because it is my first flight with CX and the inaugural flight from Düsseldorf to Hong Kong.
I was very surprised when Cathay announced in February to launch nonstop flights from Düsseldorf to Hong Kong and as the opportunity came up i directly booked a flight.
So now the flight came closer and online check in is available 48h before the flight.

I arrived at the airport and when I drop off my baggage I was told that I received an upgrade into the Premium Economy, a great start for this special flight.

A Party for this special flight was given some gates above the departure Gate, so i made my way upstairs.

Cake and sparkling wine a nice lunch :) The cake was very tasty was a mix of marzipan, raspberry and strawberry.
After the party i made my way to the gate and recognized my seat was a middle seat but the agent at the gate was able to give me an aisle seat.

Boarding started on time and every passenger received a small box with some marzipan sweets

The Flag of Hong Kong, CX logo, DUS Airport and the very fancy logo of Düsseldorf ;)

Nice legroom

During boarding the dinning card was handed out to the passengers

let have a look
Finally boarding was completed, the Economy was 100% full, in Premium Eco only the seat next to me was empty after talking to some other passengers near all Passengers in the Premium Eco received an upgrade, I reckon Business was around 80% and First was nearly 70% booked.

After departure nuts and drinks where served

Lunch was served i choose the Chinese option, stewed duck, pineapple plum sauce, pal choy, carrot and steamed jasmine rice, was very tasty.
Near the border of Kazakhstan the cabin light where switch off i was very surprised that CX only use the mood light system in Business and First, because last year i was flying with Kenya Airways Boeing 777-300 (sorry i didn't take a lot of pictures for an report) and they use the mood light also in the Economy Class.

Near Chengdu the Breakfast was served, I had the creamy scrambled egg, breakfast pork sausage, provencale mushrooms and roasted potatoes was very tasty.
We arrived some minutes ahead of schedule in Hong Kong.

Conclusion

The flight was good, it was nice to received an upgrade. The Service was good the FA done everything a little bit robotically but he also helped his colleagues in the Economy class due the full load so I can understand why he does everything fast and efficient.
Except the bigger seat and more legroom I didn't really felt a different to the normal Economy Class.
In my opinion it make not really sense to pay the double of the Economy price just for a bigger seat and more baggage allowance, but maybe an 11 hour flight is too short to compare Premium Eco with normal Eco and if I would continue from HKG it maybe would make sense, but I would pay a little bit more than Premium Economy and would fly Business.
But all in all it was a good flight and I had no complaints.

  • Special flight, good flight. Thanks to share this FR !

  • Nice FR, thanks for sharing.

What's the difference between economy and premium ? On the pictures the seats seems to be quite identical, with only the color changing.

    • The Seat have 6cm (2,3inch) more pitch and has 1cm (0,4inch) more width, also the food is different (but not more and the tast is as good as in normal Economy), you have 5Kg (11 lbs) more free baggage and priority boarding.

  • Thanks for sharing this special report on an inaugural flight. Very exciting and congrats on the upgrade! Do you have oneworld status or did you just get really lucky? There aren't too many reports on CX's Premium Economy and from the ones I've seen the seats look comfortable, but the soft product seems too close to Economy (Granted, economy class standards are really high and way above average on CX). Are all drinks served in plastic cups or are there real glasses during the meals? I just see a plastic cup for the pre-dinner drink. I think to make the experience more premium CX could offer a pre-departure drink and have linens for meal services. Nice report!

    • No I haven't any oneworld status, but Economy was overbooked so I get lucky.

You are absolutely right CX has high standard in economy and I felt no difference in Service between Economy and Premium Economy. No they only use plastic cups also knife, fork and spoon are plastic.

I think pre-departure drink would be a nice touch, but if an airline has so high standards like CX it's hard to create an product between Economy and Business class.

  • Great to be on an inaugural flight. CX's premium Y does look a bit lame compared to other airlines' offering.

    Thanks for sharing!
