My first trans-atlantic and long haul flight since June 2000…
And its on a KLM Boeing 747-400! Something I've wanted to tick off for a VERY long time!
I flew to AMS from OSL that morning on a KLM 737-700 (PH-BGL) and did a 1 hour 40 minute connection easily. (Images & Video bellow)
Had a very long wait as I prefer to hold off until I am one of the last on,
I had to go get an extra check done as I was "Randomly Selected" amongst 50 other pax, but that was probably down to me never going to the US before.
So I get on the Boeing 747 which is packed full for this 11 hour flight from Holland to the US West-Coast and had to load my bag 15 rows behind me due to lack of cabin locker space.
Not the best start, but not a huge issue as I found a spot and I noted where my bag would be for later on. I settled into my seat and explored the IFE as the plane would be 20 minutes late leaving the gate. Which wasn't an issue for me as I knew we'd make up the time in the sky as well as it being normal for such an airport like AMS.
So once we got going, I followed us along the North Sea back towards my home country (England/GB/UK) and once we had flown past where one of my friends lived in East London, I switched into the TV section. Enjoying an episode of Undercover Boss USA followed by some episodes of American Dad & Bones. No point tuning into Dutch TV Shows as I don't speak or understand the lingo.
First snacks to be delivered by the crew were peanuts and a choice of drinks from the bar service. I selected OJ as a healthy option to start with.
About an hour later, the crew offered the main course of the flight. There were two main options and I chose the meatball selection. I thought it was very nice. I also felt obliged to indulge the meal with a locally Dutch Heineken Beer. The meal also boasted a Chocolate Mouse, bread roll with butter alongside some horrid and weird salad item…
I watched the film Dunkirk and slept a bit on & off during the flight. I also took the time to explore the 747 cabin, including a sneaky visit up to for a shot of the Business Cabin in the upper deck from the back whilst the flight attendant was working on the lower galley.
Always good to get walking on a long haul flight. Does the body some good!
Also got some nice cabin shots of the economy section from the back of the 747!
Flying across Greenland & Northern Canada.
We also got given an Ice-Cream in the middle of the flight, around 5 hours to go.
Coming across the Western Area of the USA, desert scenery and urban cities began to take over.
And low & behold only 2 1/2 hours before we land, the second meal service came in the form of a Pizza, classic American dish!
We began our decent into LAX and we arrived about 15 minutes ahead of schedule. Though it took us a while to taxi and park up in the TBIT. Thus my US Trip officially could begin!
My first point of call was the famous "In-Out Burger" at LAX which I flew past going in. I stopped for an hour on a bridge half-way between walking to the place and the Terminal as I had a chance for some decent photographs!
I did finally get there and enjoy a burger meal (with a long awaited ROOT BEER) and some nice evening aircraft action!
Flight Review: KLM 747-406 PH-BFH (AMS-LAX)
Thanks for this FR.
Good service as usual in KLM Y, and always the thrill of flying with the Queen.
Only the IFE begin to clearly show its age.
Hopefully I can get another flight with one before they get retired!
