As you will recall, the purpose of this trip is the 787 of LAN Airlines, for few weeks now LAN is operating with the Dreamliner their flagship route to Europe: SCL-MAD-FRA.
I have no time nor money to go to SCL, so having the opportunity to sample the aircraft on a short European hop make perfect sense for me.
LAN being a OneWorld member, they are using the pleasant Terminal 4, which I personally really like.

Thankfully no aircraft change today, with the expected 787-8, and the first one operated by an American Carrier: CC-BBA.


I am always thrilled before getting aboard!



First impression is very good, very airy and you are directly in the Business Class cabin, it’s always more pleasant than facing a galley.
These are full flat seats in a 2-2-2 configuration and look pretty comfy.



But I am seated in Economy, still with 3 seats to myself, load is pretty good with 60/70% seat factor in Economy, I would say.


Pitch is TIGHT!

Cabin crew is very nice, I told them that the only reason I am here today is to sample their new aircraft, and they brought me Champagne and Nuts from the Business, very tactful!

IFE is of latest generation, no remote control but with HD screen and highly responsive touch screen.

We are given a box containing a cheese and turkey sandwich + Kitkat bar
I also took redwine wich is served from a whole bottle.

I asked for an another meal box, which is promptly brought to me with my choice of drink, water for this second round.


Don't you love this wingflex? The hallmark of the Dreamliner.


Soon enought, we are starting our descent toward Frankfurt

Before I forget, to switch on your overhead light or to call flight attendants you have to press the main screen button.

I have my doubts on the comfort of this configuration on a transatlantic flight...how was the recline?

Yes indeed, the pitch is limited but there is no ife box underneath and the seat do recline.

SCL-MAD must be a 11-12hrs flight, that must be a nightmare with such a small seat pitch!
With a 787 on this route, the Iberia flights must be empty (as far as I am concerned, I wouldn't fly a 320/321 if I can fly this 787 with IFE) ? have you compared the prices?
For an avgeek LAN is an educated guess but if you have some timetable constraint you will probably choose IB or LH.
I think I'll wait more months or even years before I fly on board Dreamliner until Boeing fixes all the problems which occured on the B787.
I agree with Durian about the pitch in Economy Class.
Personnaly, I find the new Iberia corporate logo ugly.

You were lucky to fly on this 787. I remember this saturday that the flight was operated with a Air Europa A330... I can't even imagine your reaction to this. lol
The pitch seems to be really tight, The SCL-MAD or return leg concerning it and the duration of the flight would make you feel so cramped ! (Then I looked up, +1000 to DURIAN. lol)
Really nice flight and experience tho, really nice FA and touching attentions. I'd definitely fly them instead of IB on this route. So bad the MAD-CDG-MAD route is discontinued.

Maybe they had a tech with the 787 and went with the 332 Air Europa instead, I would have been upset for sure!

If I recall KE is operating VIE-ZRH as fifth freedom? Albeit a bit pricey

Thanks for sharing this interesting 5th freedom route. I'm surprised that the pitch is so tight considering the loooong flights that these aircraft are doing. Appart from that it is a beautiful airplane inside and out. Beautiful pics as usual, especially your signature night spotting pics.

The J cabin looks terribly common.
The Y cabin looks nice even if the pitch is a scandal. It fits people under 1.6 meter.
For those (like me) who complain about UU new catering in Y on Medium haul routes, looking at the box you were offered will change our mind. And you were lucky to get 2 of them (and the welcome drink) = a tribute to FA.

Thanks for this special report full of superb pictures. I noticed that IB is already phasing in their new logo which is a bit disappointing in my humble opinion. The old one was just perfect with the crown and the I and B fused together.
Nice to read about the good service you received from the crew. The cabin looks airy as you said but personally I think that the blue colors of their seats would have been more conducive to relaxation than the warm red tones in the J cabin.

Nice gesture from the staff but it's the opposite of tactful in the view and know of the rest of the Y passengers. I would have noticed and blamed it, you know that ;)
