Introduction

Hi all,

Given that most of my funds are currently allocated to renovating my newly-bought house and I had to postpone most of my travel plans for now, I couldn't resist a short trip with my wife to visit her friend in Liverpool. EasyJet is the only airline that offers a direct flight from Amsterdam to Liverpool with a return fare of 250 EUR for 2 persons with a single hold luggage for 15 KG and allocated seats.

The other option would have been to book a flight to Manchester which offers a lot of flights to Amsterdam, but with prices as steep as 550 euro, I simply chose the most reasonable and logical choice.

Routing

Flight

Originally me and my wife planned to return to Amsterdam on Sunday's afternoon flight, but as the sale of our newly-bought house was planned for Monday, we didn't want to gamble a missed flight and changed our flight to Saturday, which unfortunately was a very very early one with a wake up call at 4 AM.

As we both valued our sleep more than waking up even earlier, we decided to book us an Uber instead of using the public transport. The Uber took us in roughly 25 minutes for a price of 36 GBP (Night Surcharge) to Liverpool's Airport and after having two days of great weather, the rainy weather returned to the UK. A great day to leave!

The terminal at this time was very quiet with only a handful flights departing to sunnier destinations at this time and Amsterdam. We went to one of the counters to drop off our luggage, which took only a minute or 5 to be completed. The gentleman behind the counter said that the gate would be announced 30 minutes prior to departure, but told us that he was pretty sure it was going to be Gate 10.

Other than the usual low-cost like EasyJet & Ryanair, Lufthansa is the odd bird at Liverpool's airport as a legacy carrier.

Security was a bit busier than the terminal's check-in and took a total of 15 minutes to clear. The great part of some of the airports in the UK is that even though you are leaving the country, border control is pretty non-existent and I guess they're using the Airline's manifest to determine who's exiting the country.

Seating capability is really limited at Liverpool's airport and almost all benches and chairs were occupied.

EasyJet's flight to Belfast was already boarding.

Upon reaching Gate 10, the aircraft was already boarding passengers, yet to be lined up in the jetway to the aircraft. Don't really understand the point of starting to board when the aircraft is not ready yet and it's not really customer friendly, but I guess you can't expect these things with low-cost airlines as efficiency is key.

Most passengers were ignoring their seating numbers and wanted to make use of the first bridge to the aircraft without actually making an effort to bypass the line to the back of the aircraft like me and my wife did.

Today's flight would be performed by an Airbus A320. G-EZWY is a 7.9 year old Airbus A320 delivered to EasyJet in September 2014. In November 2016, EasyJet registered this aircraft to EasyJet Switzerland for 7 months to fly as HB-JXH. Only to be returned to EasyJet in June 2017 again with the same registration (G-EZWY). It is configured in an all-economy configuration with 180 very uncomfortable seats!

Remember the line in front? They were blocking us now as passengers who ignored instructions by staff  as to what entry to use were now pushing themself down to the aft of the cabin via the front door.  Though it gave me a nice view of the aircraft's fuselage.

Even though we were in the aft of the cabin, legroom was no issue to me and I'm about 1.83m tall, which translates to 6''0 for our American friends.

Padding was almost non-existent and the biggest issue I've had with those type of seats were that I had no headrest. For an early flight with only 4 hours of slept, I fancied to close my eyes for a solid hour only to be woken up about 15 minutes later by a stringent pain in my neck as there was simply no support. Luckily enough the flight took no more than 45 minutes, but if you ever decide to book EasyJet on a flight of over 2 hours with this cabin, You're in for some true torture.

View from our window with my wife occupying the window seat. Fueling was still in progress and warnings were made throughout the cabin to not fasten your seatbelt and remove your shoes as an evacuation was at risk due to refueling.

Cabin's occupancy was 100% for today's flight to Amsterdam and pushback for our departure was right on time. Departure followed 5 minutes later with the sky clearing up.

The entire flight was pretty uneventful and nothing else to be reported. Today's cabin crew was more efficient and better trained and provided everyone with their drinks and meals as requested well ahead of time.. Yet I do not understand why so many people order a Gin&Tonic at 8 am in the morning….

While I personally did not take a photo of the Buy on Board Menu & Safety Card of today's flight, I took the opportunity to upload the photos of my previous flight for those who didn't read it. Menu and Safety Card were exactly the same as those, although no sickbag was to be found on my current flight. Guess they must have missed it as seat 27F & 27D both had them.

Touchdown was 25 minutes ahead of schedule resulting in a flight of only 49 minutes long.

Cabin crew notified us upon landing that EasyJet has a protocol on boarding and that nobody is being able to stand up until doors are opened. A few passengers ignored the first instructions and were instructed to return to their seats as soon as possible (in a friendlier matter). Not sure as to why this Covid19 procedure was in practise as they simply quit enforcing any crowding the moment the doors were opened.

Disembarked the aircraft as one of the last giving me time to capture the aircraft once again with it's reflection into the terminal.

Disembarking completed.

Upon exiting your aircraft from H gates, it is quite a distant walk to reach the border control. Amsterdam Airport canceled the self border control for UK citizens resulting in a busy ''all passport'' lines with a deserted self border control as most passengers who arrived from international destinations (non-schengen) were UK & US citizens. Given that my wife is in no possession of a Schengen Visa, we unfortunately had to qeue in that long line as well which took about 20 minutes to clear. Border agent was very friendly though asking where we've been, if we enjoyed and if we recommended it to visit. It took another 5 minutes for our luggage to appear and off we were!

Conclusion

EasyJet does the job you pay them to do, but don't expect anything fancy. The older cabin on my previous flight is more comfortable in terms of seat comfort, but the newer cabin provides you with better legroom. Flight attendants were efficient and stood by their protocol in a friendly manner. I'd choose EasyJet any time over RyanAir if the prices are right.

I've heard Liverpool has been one of the least affected US airports by staff shortages and long queues this summer. 15 minutes to clear security is pretty good compared to LHR, LGW, MAN, etc.

Yup, you summed it up perfectly. The Recaro ironing boards are hard and I generally do not like them, but their design does allow for much better knee clearance at the same seat pitch/density.

    Thanks for sharing!

      Hi Kevin,
Waiting lines were really non existent, but it took a while to clear as so many persons in front of us took lots of luggage with them and never took out any of the liquids like they were suppose to. Though regarding the seats, I still prefer better padding over knee clearance.
      Thanks for stopping by!
