Our flight back to Singapore will be flown like most of the people in the world, in economy class. I'll be reviewing Lufthansa economy class, an airline I wanted to try for some time. This is the second segment, the long haul segment back to Singapore.
The highlight of this segment is the flight on the B747-8I, probably the last time I get to fly on the Queen of the skies.

We had a 6h transit in Frankfurt before the flight back to Singapore.
Before flight: Frankfurt Airport
To kill some time, I used my Priority Pass to gain entry to the Primeclass Lounge in Terminal 1 for my wife and I.
It was a passable lounge with snacks and some light food.
I enjoyed the German potato salad and apple pie.
We made our way to the gate when it was 8.40pm German time. There were a few queens of the skies that evening. D-ABYS was going to GRU that evening.
D-ABYK was the plane to take us home. I was hoping for a B747-8I to have a special livery but that did not materialise.
Inflight experience
We boarded the flight at 9.20pm or so, and took our seat. I managed to snag the couple seat at the back of the aircraft.
I'm 1.77m and found the legroom to be below average. Leaning back slightly will cause my knees to touch the seat in front. How do the Europeans with bigger frames than me survive in this seat for long haul???
There was also an entertainment box underneath which ate into my legroom.
The seat pocket contained all the essentials, except a vomit bag.
Seating arrangement in economy class is 3-4-3, same as an A380.
The flight in economy class was about 90% full that evening. A lucky man behind me struck the economy seating jackpot got the entire row of 4 seats to himself.
The inflight entertainment screens belonged to the late 2000s or early 2010s. They're a little laggy and take some careful finger effort to work them.
Once cruising altitude was reached, cabin crew sprung into action and distributed a snack of rosemary crackers and a bottle of still water, but for some reason, my bottle turned out to be sparkling.
No other drinks were given.
I looked at the menu on the Lufthansa website and decided I did not like the creamed cheesecake dessert. I proceeded to order a Hindu meal instead.
The starter was chickpea salad which was tasty.
The main course was chicken tikka masala with rice and lentils. This was disappointing. The rice was was devoid of flavour and had the texture of a microwaved frozen rice meal (which it probably is)
There was a bowl of spiced yoghurt and I finished it.
Dessert was cheap fresh fruit.
The portion was on the smaller side too.
It was a disappointing meal. Again, I'm definitely spoilt by airlines in Asia when it comes to food on board.
I liked the metal utensils the most out of all elements of the meal tray. I believe Lufthansa is one of the only airlines that gives a metal spork to passengers in economy class for meals.
I had Becks beer and apple juice for drinks. Becks beer is tasty. It was my first time drinking it. I don't think Germany has bad beer ever?
My wife ordered from the standard menu. She said the main course of German spinach dumplings were tasty enough.
Feeling dissatisfied from dinner/supper, I made my way to the galley to get some snacks and a gin and tonic.
Non-alcoholic drinks were self-service.
The only available snacks were rosemary crackers and Manner wafers. They suffice but I wish Lufthansa provided something more substantial as snacks, such as sandwiches or even plain bread. Germany has no lack of bread!
Due to the turmoil in the Middle East, the aircraft flew a scenic route past the Himalayan mountains. What gorgeous scenery!
Lufthansa surprised us with hot towels.
I felt puzzled at that point. They have an element of a 4 or 5 star airline, like the hot towel, but everything else felt average or below average…
The cabin crew turned the mood lighting on and prepared the cabin for breakfast.
As I pre-ordered a Hindu meal, I was served an Indian vegetarian dish. The taste of this breakfast was decent, but the portions seemed to be meant for children. I was hungry after I left the flight.
The bread roll is tasty. Baked items from Europe are excellent.
The food ratings below are based on my personal taste. Food is always subjective, so please take my ratings with a pinch of salt.
The regular menu was scrambled eggs with sweet potato goulash. My wife said it tasted great.
I wish the Hindu meal included the Bauer yoghurt, because it is delicious.
The plane hit a region of turbulence in the Gulf of Thailand. As a result, all service was suspended in all classes.
Being at the back of the plane, we did not get any drinks with our breakfast. How tragic.
We also did not receive any chocolate from Lufthansa as a parting gift. I'm not sure if there is supposed to be chocolate for long haul flights.
Thank you for reading this disappointing flight on Lufthansa long haul economy!
