After an 8-day trip in Tokyo, it was time for me and my mother to go back home.
I could have picked ANA for the returning flight. Due to the ongoing Ukraine war, flight time has been extended from 10-11 hours to 14 hours.
Prior to 02/24/2022, airlines such as ANA, JAL, Korean or LH…flew Russian airpace. In 2019, ANA used to depart at 11:45 A.M but their schedule was switched to 9:45 A.M. JAL would leave at 8:25 A.M (10:30 pre-Covid). AF at 9:05 A.M (unchanged).
After assessing the situation, we eventually chose LH as the aircraft would leave at 12:35 P.M. This provided us a good night of sleep. We had a connecting flight to Paris CDG.

We arrived at around 9 A.M at Tokyo Haneda airport. We took Oedo line to Daimon. We changed line, taking Monorail then got off at Terminal 3.
I intended to get a window seat. Unfortunately, they were all blocked :/ . Nevertheless, I managed to save 19J which was located next to a window seat.
This time, my mother was assigned to 12E which was convenient for her to move around, with extra leg space. It allowed her to escape quickly in case of emergency. Luckily, that did not happen during the flight :) .

The picture below was the LH check-in counter. You had to get your boarding passes via a machine before checking-in your luggage.
Both escalators led to the observation deck, a perfect spot for aircraft lovers :D !
We turned left and continued straight forward which led directly through security checkpoint. There, photography was strictly prohibited.

Our boarding gate was located at 107B. Terminal 3 was the place where most international airlines were concentrated.
That hallway was much larger compared to the newly built satellite at Paris CDG T1.
Many people were having brakfast.
So, having eaten enough food at the hotel, I could wait until our plane departure ;) .

Between 10 A.M and noon, our airplane arrived.
At 12:15 P.M, boarding was announced.
First and Business Class passengers had the privilege to get on the airplane before others.
Then, Premium Economy travelers.
When it came to Economy class, we were divided into 5 groups. Lane 1-2, Lane 3-4 and Lane 5.
I was among the last passengers to board (group 5).

Actually, I was assigned to 12E and my mother to 19J. But we negotiated and swapped seat prior to boarding.

Entering our Jumbo Jet, I took a few pictures.
Business Class seats (picture 1)
19J was just two seats to Business Class (picture 2).

The lady sitting next to me was very friendly to me. She even let me take a few pictures while it was still daylight.
A Dreamliner of Shanghai Airlines has just arrived.

Piece of cake :D !!!

After more than 20 minutes of taxiing, our bird took off at 1:11 P.M .
First picture was taxiing just after we left our boarding gate.
Now was the right time to take the shots given that I had anticipated pitch darkness while arriving at Frankfurt Airport (final two pictures).

Two hours later, snacks were given to passengers, then drinks plus lunch.
First option, pasta Linguine.
Second option, fried pork with steamed rice. Appetizers were two sushis, a potatoe salad with a tiny slice of beef.
Exquisite !!!
After our tray was cleared, I began watching a movie.
Overall, I watched three movies (Black Adam, Civil War which was released in 2024 and Captain Miller a Bollywood movie).
I took a 45-minute break after finishing each one of them.

Many passengers were sleeping. Our cabin went dark.  Flight attendants provided us a bottle of water in case we were thirsty.
Meanwhile, we flew from the West to the East.
Therefore, we had to fly past Greenland, Iceland and Norway. This explained why our flying time has gotten extended.
2 hours prior to landing, our final meal was served. Some fried vegetable rice, bread and a fruit dessert.

We landed at 6:56 P.M . Night has already fallen. I got another picture of Business Class before getting off the plane.
Me and my mother went to Gate A after passing by security checkpoint a second time.

The final two pictures were taken from an Airbus A320neo (before leaving Frankfurt for good).
We arrived at Paris CDG between 10:15 P.M and 10:30 P.M .
After getting back our luggage, we took the commuter train (RER B) back home. The last train was leaving Roissypole station between 11 P.M and midnight.
It was cold and freezing outside.

Conclusion

This finally concluded my trip in Japan.

LH service quality was very good (although not as great as ANA). Good or bad service is subjective as we don't have the same criteria.
But it definitly met my expectations :D !
Staff was friendly.
A good quality price ratio.

When you choose an airline, it is not only about its notoriety. You have to take into account its schedule too. Fatigue must not be neglected.
I did not want to spend most of my flying time sleeping.

Check out some bonus pictures of my trip in Tokyo.

  • Hi Andy, thanks for sharing another interesting report. It's gotten so rare to be able to fly the Queen of the Skies since the pandemic. I really miss the BA 747s, they were like my shuttle across the Atlantic. Hopefully the LH 747-8I will be around for a long while considering they're relatively new.

For some reason the aircraft type was showing as 747SP (HAH! That would have been interesting in 2025), so I fixed it for you to correct 747-8i. Also, make sure you use the blurring tool in the publisher to blur out recognisable faces prior to posting as it's a requirement. I went ahead and did it for your this time. Thanks!
