I arrived at Cape Town International Airport with a taxi dropping me off directly outside the departure hall. The airport is quite modern having opened in 2010. The departure hall is very airy with the check-in desks located in the centre of the hall.
The large departures board separates domestic and international flights., although my flight wasn't yet showing on the board despite being just 2 hours from departure.
Having arrived a couple of hours before my flight I had learnt my lesson from the airport in Joburg and decided to eat before heading through security to the departure lounge. I headed up to the balcony level of the departure hall where a number of restaurants are located.
The restaurants have a great view over the runway and towards the mountains with lots of spotting opportunities.
I decided on a pizza while watching
By the time I'd finished eating it was time to head off through security. My flight still wasn't showing on the departures list :P
Arriving in the departures lounge there was slightly more to do than in Joburg. And plenty of seats - again with good views of the aircraft.
After looking around a couple of shops it was time to board. After scanning our tickets we were queued up on the air bridge with those travelling at the front on one side and in the back on the other.
I was sitting towards the rear of the plane. Passengers in the front of the plane boarded via the bridge while those of us in the back were directed out onto the tarmac and boarded via stairs.
We were greeted on board and took our seats in the non orange cabin. Leg room was good for a short haul flight with the seat pocket located above the knees.
I had chosen my seat the previous day and chose one which would give me a view. You can just make out table mountain on the horizon.
The flight was a stardard low cost flight with no freebies. I chose to eat on the airport so didn't order anything from the trolley. During the flight we had a little medical emergency. Luckily it didn't seem serious and we weren't diverted. WE did however get to land ahead of the BA flight that was departing at the same which we had been following all the way. We pulled up to the gate and had to wait for the medics at Joburg to come aboard and check the passenger was ok before we were allowed to deplane.
Arrival was hassle free as was the whole experience and I was picked up from the bus terminal at the airport by my hotel.
Thank you for this report !
A nice visit of Cape Town airport which seems nice and modern ! The windows are a big plus for planespotters and are unfortunately not as common as we would which as avgeeks x)
Lucky to have a good night view of the city, and a proper photo too !
I hope to see the return trip to Europe soon ! And maybe an improved KLM experience ? ;)
You're welcome.
Yes Cape Town airport is a nice place to pass through, the windows are definitely a bonus. I wish more airports had them instead of turning the departure lounge into shopping centres. Good window and lots of seats makes for a good experience in my opinion!
THanks for your report,
Like i told you for the first leg, this flight is interesting in terms of cost, otherwise i would prefer SA :)
CPT is located close to so many beautiful places, lucky you!!!
Time to get report to LHR? :)
Yes I'd definitely recommend a trip to Cape Town, it's a great location.
Return flight coming in the next few days! (but not to LHR!)
Thanks for this FR.
