Thanksgiving in Paradise!

Usually the family likes to head to Vegas but this year we decided to head south. We originally had flights booked on SWA from MCI to ATL then on to Cancun but after doing some research and double checking what I was looking at. It was cheaper to fly first class on american from MCI through DFW to CUN. I couldn't believe it and had someone else in the family pull up the same itinerary so I made sure I wasn't crazy. This was before I added on the checked bagged fees for everyone in the family as well.

To start the holiday we were at MCI bright an early for a quick hour flight down to DFW. Once in DFW we had about two hours to kill before boarding. We would be departing DFW out of International T4. Parked a few gates down was a 787 but our end of the terminal was a lot of 738's getting ready to head down south of the border again.

Boarding started about 20 minutes late. We were on one of the older 738's with no sky interior and the old livery. First class boarding was made with one call and all 16 seats would be full this flight. Before economy began boarding we were already being offered drinks.

We took off to the south and quickly climbed up into the flight levels. About 15 minutes after takeoff the cabin crew came alive. It was a bumpy ride until we hit the Texas coast into the gulf and at that time the seat belt sign was off. Not that people weren't up and about before hand.

Service in the first class cabin was efficient and done with a smile. The first order of business in the cabin was to get immigration documentation out. This did not slow down service in first class but being in the second to last row of first I noticed that about 40 minutes into the flight there was still no drink service in economy. We did not get a meal. With a little help from the wind and a straight out departure and straight in arrival our air time was just a little over 2 hours. This was disappointing since we were leaving during the lunch hour. Our return flight was about 30 minutes longer and we were treated to a late lunch. Our options from a snack basket included cookies, fruits, chips, and popcorn. My brother and I enjoyed our share Tito's bloody marys on both flights after a night out with old friends back in town from work and school.

The cabin, though old, was kept up nicely. The seats had lost a lot of cushion but pitch was amazing and with a very liberal recline angle and 3 windows per aisle it was a very comfortable ride. We both utilized the flip down tray for cell phones charging in the plug ins and the cocktail trays. The middle arm rest is extra wide and both of us being over 6ft it was a great way to spend 2 hours. I read for a majority of the flight while listening to one of the 14 channels of AA radio. The flip down screens were showing different clips of NBC shows but no movie or complete episode. The radio channels include most genres, i stuck to jazz for the flight. The radio was available and working while at the gate in DFW all the way to the gate in Cancun.

Cabin service rapped up about 15 minutes before landing with the prep for arrival call coming from the cockpit. At that time the cabin crew assigned to first quickly cleaned up and took away our REAL glasses of drinks. She did offer a can of whatever we would like during her last pass of the cabin. The only bump the whole way down was when we touched down. It was very smooth and she was up chatting or handing out drinks in cans up until a couple minutes before we touched down. We took our drink with us and boy were we glad…..

We landed and were at the gate ahead of schedule in Cancun. Getting in ahead of schedule did not help with immigration's however. We spent about 30 minutes in a line to clear immigration's. After that que we were directed to baggage claim where all of the bags of our flight were already off the carousel. AA priority orange tags were clearly seen on sets of bags all packed on rollers ready to go. We grabbed our roller headed for customs, got the green light at the customs stop light and headed for the beach.

Hi there and welcome to the site. It's always nice to see an AA flyer post on here. I do have to say, however, that this report is too light on photos. Only 3 pics isn't really sufficient--you at least need some cabin, catering, and place shots. You do have a lot of good detail in the text though, so that part's good. Please add more pics next time :-)

    - Yep, that happens a lot during the Holidays. There is very little business travel at those times so First class can often be the same price as coach, because the only coach fares left to sell on full holiday flights, are really expensive fares.

Thanks for the advice. Next time around I will make sure to visually backup the report.
