Aloha! and welcome to this exciting report that marks my first time experience flying with Hawaiian Airlines.

My schedule is as follows:

SFO-HNL on HA F - you are here.
HNL-SFO on HA Y - http://flight-report.com/en/report-13626.html

I have always been intrigued by this "niche" carrier flying from its "paradise" hub and its logo of the Pualani girl is one of the most iconic in the world immediately associating it to the name of the company. JL and AS are two other airlines that come to mind with this type of strong name association.

This trip was not planned in advance and it happened in a whim. A few weeks ago my sister found a special "2 for 1" on VX and she purchased that fare for herself and my mom. She asked me to join them for the weekend and when I saw that HA offered the cheapest fare at the time for USD 408 (EUR 373.52) total, I jumped on the opportunity to use this as the perfect excuse to try it. Once I booked the ticket, I contacted HA to see if they would match my AA EXP status to their highest level - Pualani Platinum (40,000 miles/year).

Within 10 business days I received a reply from HA welcoming me as a PLT member. I was advised to wait 3 business days for the new status to be updated in the system. Compared to my experience with CM where my status showed right away after I was told that my match was approved over the phone, this seemed a bit slow. Don't get me wrong, I was grateful that I was matched by HA after reading of other people's partially successful attempts (one writer reported that he was given status for 4 months only) and most importantly, be qualified in time to enjoy some of the benefits before my trip.

One of the most cherished perks for attaining elite status with any carrier is the opportunity to upgrade for free or a nominal amount. On HA, Pualani PLT members receive 2 one-way complimentary upgrades on North American flights (HNL-Mainland or vv.) I called to inquire about this benefit and was advised that requests needed to be received within 72 hrs of dept. I called back within that time and was told that nothing was available but was welcome to try later. Unlike AA, HA does not waitlist passengers for free upgrades and the only way to find out is to keep calling up until 4 hrs before dept. After the 24 hrs threshold came I finally received some good news. There was a space open in "A" inventory and just when the agent assigned my seat and verified my profile, she told me that there were no upgrades in my account. At that moment I felt like I was hit with a ton of bricks and I became silent for a few seconds. I tried to understand what just happened here. Could it be that when I was matched, the upgrades were not part of the deal? I wouldn't be surprised but then I was never advised by the agent from the Hawaiian Miles program about this stipulation. Furthermore, upon checking my account it stated upgrades as part of the benefit. I then asked the agent to leave everything as it was and I contacted HA PLT desk afterwards.

By the way, I saw that Extra Comfort seats were available and when I switched my regular seat to one of those, I noticed that there was a USD 75 (EUR 69.06) charge. As I later found out, Elite members can get complimentary Extra Comfort seats but on a standby basis at the gate on the day of departure and you can put yourself on the standby list for those seats when you check-in online. I find this benefit to be very restrictive, especially towards PLT members.

When I called the HA PLT line, the agent confirmed that she couldn't see upgrades in my account. She placed me on hold and checked. After what felt like the most agonizing couple of minutes that I have ever spent waiting, she came back and explained that the upgrades had to be processed manually since I did not earn them through flying. I asked about my flight and she confirmed that there was still space in F. She put me on hold again and when she came back I was confirmed in F but she couldn't assign me a seat and explained it would have to be done either during online check-in or at the airport. I checked in online and there were no seats, so I had to wait for my seat assignment at the airport.

The day of departure I parked my car by the airport and arrived at the HA counter at the International terminal by 6:45A. A smiling and friendly agent helped me and upon presenting my papers, she instructed me to get the boarding pass from the gate because the seats were no longer under her control. In the back of my head I became a bit worried thinking that this flight might be overbooked. Then again, the day before the HA site was still selling 1 F/C seat at the last minute even though the seat map showed all seats occupied and on top of that I was upgraded, so it couldn't be that bad.

Ticket counter - not crowded at all.

I used the self service kiosk to access the seat map and it was still showing full. Then a smiling agent greeted me and asked if she could help me. Her name tag said something like Hawaiian Ambassador which caught my eyes. I mentioned that I was still waiting for a seat assignment and she confirmed that it will be handled at the gate. I thanked her and went on my way to security.

After showing the agent my boarding pass at security, she motioned me to join the long line. I asked if elite status flyers could go to the special priority line and after checking the boarding pass again, she allowed me to use it. The line to go through the scanner was backing up and this was getting frustrating. The TSA agents looking at the x-ray were being meticulous and that delayed the process a bit. A big percentage of the passengers were heading to Hawaii judging by the conversations that I've heard.

Finally on the other side, I was able to put myself together and go directly to the gate. The duty free shops were not opened yet so there was not much to do. My gate was switched from A1 to A6 and that was written on my boarding pass when I checked at the counter.

HA planes - one to HNL and the other to OGG. I think HA did a magnificent job with the livery. It looks gorgeous on the A330's.

At the gate, I explained to the agent that I needed to be assigned a seat and she issued me a new boarding pass right away. As a boarding pass collector, I am a bit disappointed that the logo of the Pualani girl is not printed on the boarding card, contrary to the ones that I have seen printed from the self checking kiosks, but I don't like those flimsy "toilet paper" passes. As matter of fact, the logo is not even featured on the napkins or menus - a shame.

At 45 min. before dept., an announcement was made at the gate to board families with children and handicapped passengers. This was followed by F and elite passengers.

Inside the jetbridge, a made a turn to the left. ;)

Upon entering I was greeted by the purser and another FA.

The first row of Extra Comfort is really spacious.

I noticed that the two flights attendants assigned to the F cabin were really proactive in helping people. One of them was storing a bag in the overhead bin and the purser was wiping the IFE control of one of the seats in front when a passenger mentioned to him that it was sticky. He also cleaned the control from the companion seat with a cheerful disposition.

FA's passed around with a tray containing champagne, pineapple juice or a mix of both. I chose the pineapple juice with champagne and it was delicious.

The seat provided a 45-46 in. (114.3-116.84 cm.) pitch and they were the recliner type with extended footrest. Acceptable for a West Coast - HNL flight, but not ideal for longer intl. destinations and JFK.

After take off menus were passed. I thought that the menu cover was well designed with a local touch in the graphics. At least much better than the one page menu from AA (if they are still passing those). There were no choices but the brunch was structured around 3 courses - an appetizer of smoked salmon with cream cheese and warm bagel, a Quiche Lorraine as main dish accompanied by fresh fruits and a lilikoi (passion fruit) cheesecake for dessert.

It's time to check out the WC and wash my hands before the meal. Great to see that there is also a touch of the islands in the decor.

Hot towels were distributed while I was in the WC and the purser handed me one as I went back to my seat. They were thin just like the ones that AA uses.

Another FA offered unwrapped headsets from a tray. They did not look like the noise cancelling type but were comfortable.

I then saw the FA collecting the menus that were given out. I thought that this was odd and when I asked if I could keep mine as a souvenir she nicely offered me more from the batch that she has collected.

Tropical cocktail of passion fruit, orange and guava with tidbits.

I asked for a cup of green tea and it was served with spoon and a glass ramekin to put the tea bag.

A FA went to each passenger showing the wine selections and asking if they would like some for breakfast.

Linens were placed on the tables.

First course - warm bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese. The salmon was minced and personally I thought that serving it in slices would have been more premium. I love smoked salmon and I enjoyed it regardless of how it was served.

The main dish - Quiche Lorraine. The fruits were sweet and fresh. I thought that the portion of the quiche was on the small side and was surprised that there were no breakfast breads like croissants or muffins.

The final touch - dessert. This is the same dessert that is featured on lunch/dinner flights according to HA's website.

photo HA 11 SFO-HNL (47) - Copyphoto HA 11 SFO-HNL (49) - Copy

After the conclusion of the meal, I watched "Spectre". In the meantime, the FA's passed around offering water and must have done this at least 4-5 times during the flight.

Conclusion

I truly enjoyed my experience with Hawaiian and look forward to flying with them again in the future. The employees that I have encountered have been friendly and professional, making them true ambassadors of the airline's home with their aloha spirit. I felt that my vacation started the moment that I stepped inside a HA plane.

HA and UA are the only airlines that operate widebodies to HNL out of SFO. From a comfort standpoint, it is always preferable to fly with a big plane. The recliner seats in F were fine given the length of this flight, but the comfort level is not as great if your flight is 5+ hours. Thankfully HA will be switching to lie flat seats in the future and that will make it more competitive.

Catering was pleasantly structured around defined courses and meals were well presented. I appreciate the distribution of a nicely designed menu describing the meal in details. However, having no choices and the lack of breakfast breads are a few cons that come to mind.

Thank you Jetsetpanda for this excellent report. It really makes me long for the sights, sounds and smells of the islands!

Compared to my experience with CM where my status showed right away... this seemed a bit slow.
-They're on Hawaiian time. Hang loose.

I think HA did a magnificent job with the livery. It looks gorgeous on the A330's.
-I totally agree and it reflects the special place you are venturing to.

I thought that the portion of the quiche was on the small side and was surprised that there were no breakfast breads like croissants or muffins.
-My goodness that is a small portion. It looks like it should be side or accompaniment to a main.

I saved it for later and enjoyed it with the rum punch before arrival.
    - i love the logo on the glass. All the colorful beverages look very festive.

I know you traveled last minute and were subject ot the upgrade gods but a window seat is to be cherished flying in and out of the islands.

Thank you again and happy flying.

      - Good one, I forgot about that. LOL!

My goodness that is a small portion.
      - They could have thrown a few sausage links or bacon strips, don't you think?

i love the logo on the glass. All the colorful beverages look very festive.
      - It is a very iconic logo and I love it. Too bad they don't feature it more prominently on other items.

...but a window seat is to be cherished flying in and out of the islands.
      - Absolutely right my friend. I had a window in Y before the upgrade cleared as a consolation prize, but in the end I didn't need it. ;)

      Thanks Christian for stopping by.

    Thanks for this nice FR.
It's great that you got that match before the flight and even more so that you could indeed upgrade in the end.
The service is nice with attention to details, however I think they could do more and provide a true international flight like experience.

      Thanks Etienne.

For the longest time HA was perceived as a regional carrier serving a leisure destination. Then starting in 2010, it grew exponentially and began flying to new international markets. While the soft product is great, I don't think the hard product is up to par with its intl. competitors. However, there are improvements coming like new J seats and more airline partners (TK was the latest one to sign an agreement with them).

Glad to read you had a pleasant flight. Spending time with family keeps one enthusiastic.

Like Hawaiians used to tell me in the islands: when a native says aloha to a tourist it always means good-bye. :)

Nice to see the FA didn't reply to the pax pointing out the sticky control that it takes the same amount of effort to wipe it yourself.

To serve those beauty pageant contestant meal portions constitutes humor. The airline may as well have crew stop at Costco and grab a bag of artisan bread, Scottish lox, charcuterie and cake. ;) It reminded me a Johnny Carson joke that frequent flyers are less likely to attempt suicide since surviving airline meals prove them hard to kill.

when a native says aloha to a tourist it always means good-bye. :)
      - But I've been confused at times for a local, so in my case I take it that it has a different meaning. ;)

      - As you know Hawaiians are heavily influenced by Japanese culture. That would have been unthinkable. :P

To serve those beauty pageant contestant meal portions constitutes humor.
      - Reports show that obesity in the U.S. has reached epidemic proportions for some time. It wouldn't hurt to exercise some restraint in portion size, even at the front. :P

Thanks for your visit Caribel. Siempre un placer!

Thanks for sharing. It looks like you had a nice flight with Hawaiian Airlines! Reports from Hawaiian Airlines are not often on this website, so great to get an idea of what the service and food is like on board one of their A330's. Looks like you had a nice flight with them, but I'd agree the food presentation looks a bit small.

Looking forward to seeing your return trip.

Losing a window seat for the privilege of flying Domestic First ? The trade-off is a balanced one, IMO.
The introduction nevertheless shows the experience of a PT FF in draining every single drop of a privilege out of his status :)
The flowers in the toilet seem to be on the return leg of a round trip from Hawaii.

      - Frequent flyers make the most out of every situation. ;)

For an airline with a limited customer base and only 2 tier elite level, the benefits for top PLT could be better. For example, the ability to waitlist for the complimentary upgrades between HNL-mainland would make things easier instead of having to call frequently. In addition I think that PLT members should be able to reserve Extra Comfort seats right when they book instead of standing by at the gate for those.

      - Maybe they are air fresheners. ;)

The line to go through the scanner was backing up and this was getting frustrating. The TSA agents looking at the x-ray were being meticulous and that delayed the process a bit.
    - Until it gets too long and they just wave 10 people through the crew metal detector defeating the point of their whole scrutiny...

As matter of fact, the logo is not even featured on the napkins or menus - a shame.
    - I was going to complain about this exact same thing in one of my US carrier reports, why do they insist on being corporate sell-outs to Coca-Cola (or whoever) and use cheesy looking napkins even in F. But scrolling later into your report, HA is ahead of AA in this regard because at least they use HA napkins and not advertisement laden ones.

Inside the jetbridge, a made a turn to the left. ;)
    - I would have done a right turn and then seen how the FA responded when checking BPs. The left turn entering the plane is always nicer ;)

when a passenger mentioned to him that it was sticky
    - Proactive, but also concerning about the aircraft cleaning. Nice to see the PDB is offered in a real glass (an improvement over AA too). Related to the HA crews, they are the airline's real asset. I think HA crews are really passionate about their company and that really improves the in-flight experience. They make you feel like you are in Hawaii by the time you board the plane.

There were no choices but the brunch was structured around 3 courses
    - That's a little bit of a disappointment not to pick, but the presentation of drinks and courses all looks very good. I've generally heard very good things about HA catering and the food visually looks great. I agree that the quiche is on the small side and getting sliced salmon would be better. You had a bagel with the first course, so I'm not surprised there was no breakfast pastries offered. For a 4-hour flight, more than adequate catering.

Thanks for sharing this report Adan!

    - Which is what happened eventually.

why do they insist on being corporate sell-outs to Coca-Cola (or whoever) and use cheesy looking napkins even in F.
    - Because money talks?

The left turn entering the plane is always nicer ;)
    - I think everybody is treated equally nice with HA. They are very egalitarian in that sense.

Proactive, but also concerning about the aircraft cleaning.
    - I think the cleaning problem is across the board with every airline.

They make you feel like you are in Hawaii by the time you board the plane.
    - It's palpable. Besides, everybody is in a happy mood when heading to Hawaii.

You were Lucky to get your status match so easily, with every single elite privilege included.

I am grateful that HA matched my status and in all honesty I think that they are the best airline to fly between the mainland U.S. and Hawaii - whether in F or Y.

Yes, the catering is very different compared to its competitors but in a special kind of way despite the lack of meal choices and morning pastries. Everything from the menu to the presentation of the food feels well planned with some thoughts put in the process. Little details like pre-dept. beverages presented in glasses, the design of the menu, the sequence of the meal, and presentation set them apart and are appreciated.

A nice report on HA! An interesting fact regarding one of your comments... you indicated disappointment in HA's not putting the Pualani logo on the boarding passes or napkins. The logo is very much an icon and as such, carries with it tremendous pride, importance and meaning. She is a symbol of hospitality, dedication and the aloha spirit. She is, Hawaiian Airlines. This is the reason why she is not over-used and does not appear everywhere one looks, potentially diluting her importance. Therefore, within the brand guidelines there is a rule that Pualani not be put on anything that could be thrown away or stepped on. This is why, the logo does not appear on boarding passes, napkins, ticket envelopes, blankets, pillows, etc... Other branding elements take on those roles, leaving Pualani to continue to be the guiding symbol of the airline. Another note... the word aloha is more than just a word. It is a feeling, expression, greeting and salutation. This is why you'll often hear the word used interchangeably in many contexts. Looking forward to reading more of your impressions on HA and other carriers.

Welcome azj and thank you for those clarifications that are more meaningful coming from the perspective of a local (and company insider if I dare conjecture).

The Pualani logo is one of the most gorgeous logos that I have encountered for an airline. Landor Associates did a fantastic job when it was created back in the 70's.

Hello Adan, sorry for being late. Shame on me!!!!

Well, it's not that easy to get an upgrade to First on HA.

I'm underwhelmed by the F cabin, but at least, it was comfortable.

What can I say about the catering. Smoked salmon looks good but why did the airline decide to be so stingy. So that travellers arrive in shape when they lie down on the beach?

      - I strive for objectivity in my reviews.

      Way too stingy portions :(
      - Small portions? yes. Stingy? that is stretching it. Each course was well defined and besides this is the only carrier that has a dessert course for brunch.

Of course you were in First Class, let's see after a flight in the back ;)
      - My return was in Y and I still stand by my statement. ;)

      Thank you Gilbert.

Thank you for sharing this FR with us!

I'm glad you got to fly with HA and that you managed to grab a seat in F after all of those complications.

The HA livery sure looks good on the A330! Nice shots of your bird at LAX.

The seat looks alright for a flight of this length.

I haven't heard about such helpful FAs in a while, glad to know they still exist.

Overall it seems like you had a pretty good flight with HA, the catering could use some improvements but nothing is perfect.

Have a good one, see you!

      - Actually it is in SFO, but close enough. ;)

      - HA has pretty good crew overall. It's part of their trademark I guess.

Thank you for this very informative FR Adan!

I had absolutely no knowledge of how HA's FFP worked before reading this report, but I'm not very surprised at how restrictive and not very generous it is. Except for AA, I believe no other US Legacy carrier has Complimentary Elite upgrades to Hawaii. I remember on DL, I had to use Regional Upgrade Certificates. I'm glad, the upgrade situation worked out for you and it was nice of HA to just give you a straight up match instead of offering a challenge. The whole seat assignment thing is weird, though...so they block some seats in F until the last minute? I know all the other big guys, AA, DL, and UA, block some seats until OLCI opens, but blocking seats until departure time is odd.

I think HA did a magnificent job with the livery. It looks gorgeous on the A330's.
    - The HA livery is beautiful on any aircraft. It even looks good on the smaller 717s.

I've only flown HA up front on inter-island before. Do they have the same lounge access policies as other US carriers, only for international?

I chose the pineapple juice with champagne and it was delicious
    - That does sound delicious! Why have I never thought of this before? haha

The seat provided a 45-46 in. (114.3-116.84 cm.) pitch and they were the recliner type with extended footrest. Acceptable for a West Coast - HNL flight, but not ideal for longer intl. destinations and JFK.
    - It's certainly better than any other US carrier flying from the West Coast to Hawaii with standard domestic F cabins with only 36-38 pitch.

I then saw the FA collecting the menus that were given out. I thought that this was odd
    - I'd never seen FA's collect menus in F/J either until a recent AA flight in J. I thought it was weird too, and cheap, assuming they want to reuse them. I didn't even get a chance to take pics of the menu. Maybe they're being cheap and green at the same time, lol.

The appetizer looks good, but that quiche is tiny! It's like one of those mini-quiche hors d'oeuvres for parties!

Overall a good flight with good service and above average seats for West Coast to Hawaii.

    Thanks for sharing!

      - I don't know if they status match frequently, but I am grateful.

      - Maybe they really overbook in which case it would make sense that the gate has control of the seats until the last minute.

Do they have the same lounge access policies as other US carriers, only for international?
      - Now you know. ;) The Premier lounge is a nice gesture, but it's truly basic.

      That does sound delicious!
      - Pineapple juice adds a different layer of complexity to the drink. Try it. ;) Even better, there is a mix with lychee and something else (maybe mango or pineapple) that is sold in the Asian grocery store. I think it is made by Del Monte.

It's like one of those mini-quiche hors d'oeuvres for parties!
      - Good thing that the brunch was in courses.

      Thanks for visiting Kevin.
