Stopover in Vienna
Before the main flight report, I would like to show you some photos from my day-long stopover in Vienna that heppened to be a very warm, sunny and nice summer day. It is very easy to reach the city centre from the airport that is situated very near and connected by a frequent train service. There are special direct trains and local trains that cost much less and need just a couple of minutes more to reach the city, so don't waste your money and take the local train as we did thanks to our friends that spent some time in Vienna in the past and knew the trick.
It is useless to write here about widely known Vienna highlights. Having just one day limits your possibilities to minimum and as we had already been to Vienna twice, we chose just a long walk trough the old town with several stops for local specialties as wiener schnitzel or sacher torte.
Impressive cathedral and streets of the old town
Strauss monument
Karlsplatz
The Belvedere
I love these traffic lights
Wiener Schnitzel
and the best Sacher Torte with coffee in Mozart Cafe
The flight
After a short train ride we were back to the airport for our final flight back home.
It's OS nest
VIE is not my favourite airport as it has quite limited spotting facilities, anyway we are not staying here for long
Austrian 777-200
and a classic 767-300
A320
WE fly a Q400 today, that's certain
After a relatively long bus ride we reach our aircraft
This time our seats are in the very rear of the cabin, while the front business section had every second seat blocked for the pax comfort
Take off after a short taxi. The engine steals a part of the view.
Shortly we are overflying Bratislava with a great view of the city and BTS airport with crossed runways
Traditional OS service in Y with beverages + sweet or salty snack. OS serves two different types of beer (Gosser and Ottakringer) and the flight attendants asked which one they prefer, offer one of a kind to me and another one to my friend. They will come back later to ask which one was better in our opinion. This 2-girl crew was generally very nice and in great mood that day.
Overflying Tatra mountains on Polish - Slovakian border
Descending to WAW
Short finals and landing
LOT 787 on our way to a remote stand
My seat and cabin during deboarding
Our Q400
and LH A320 on our way to the terminal
Waiting for the bags
Many thanks for reading and many great flights and reports in New Year! :)
czesc lukasz
happy new year plus thanks for report and the series
looks like OS is the austrian version of LO
Cześć! Happy New Year to You too! For me OS is far better than LO. Thanks for stopping by!
I enjoyed reading the series, thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
Hey Loukas! Fantastic that you were able to work in a day's stopover in Vienna--love the photos. Such a beautiful city! And you had perfect weather.
Once again, I'm finding Austrian's colour palette very attractive. Normally a Q400 cabin is nothing special, but that red and grey really pop. Also a big fan of that livery on the Q400.
I also love that Austrian still serve free beer in Y within Europe. Especially with so many larger flag carriers having cut alcohol or gone B.O.B. I flew BA short-haul in Y a few weeks ago...it was my first time in intra-EU Y since they went BOB (since I've only flown J the past few years) and it was kind of shocking how cheap it felt to have to pay for WATER! Especially after connecting from a long-haul flight in Premium Economy. Not a fan of that at all!
Thanks for sharing and Happy New Year! Here's to many good flights in 2020!
Hi Kevin, I agree that Austrian colours, even if very simple, look great. I you haven't been to Vienna, go there and you will love it. BA's intra-EU economy class is exactly the same as LCC product, on WAW-LHR route for example, LOT, serving just a chocolate bar and water/tea/coffee, is a better option. Anyway, it's a big shame that they don't provide at least free beverages. Thanks for stopping by and Happy New Year!
