Emirates' Airbus A380s have multiple configurations and seating densities. This particular A380 has a maximum of 615 seats, by far the highest number of any double-decker operator globally .It is a two class configured aircraft with the upper deck first class section replaced with economy class which is where I was seated for the flight.
Our flight for the day (A6-EUP / 7 Years old at the time) which is one the few two class configured A380's.
We boarded the aircraft through the lower deck airbridge which meant we had to climb the stairs of the plane to reach the upper deck.
The upper deck economy seats are much more expensive to reserve as compared to the lower deck but it does have its perks as I will show you below.
The first perk is this stunning view of the wing and engines which you would have had to purchase a first class ticket on a 3 class configured A380 to see. However due to curvature of the aircraft on the upper deck you would need to strain your neck a little to view it properly.
Another perk of the upper deck economy seat is the extra personal storage which also acts as a wider arm rest. It is very helpful for storing smaller items like passport bags, wallets ,purses ,laptop bags etc. However, your carry on most likely would not fit in this space as it is not too wide.
One of the star features of emirates economy is the dual screen setup which allows you to utilize the onboard cameras to get every angle of the plane from outside.
The A380 windows are slightly restrictive due to its curved shape however the sound insulation is very nice and the cabin isn't too loud even during takeoff.
We took off into the sunrise as we climbed 40,000ft into the sky.
The other benefit of the upper deck economy seat is that since it was a replaced first class cabin the bathroom is huge which space to move around and stretch a bit which was one of my favorite features of this configuration. There were 2 more bathrooms on the other side which weren't as big but definitely reduces the number of people waiting to use the bathroom.
Its funny to see stairs on a plane!
2 hours after departure the meal service begin to start our breakfast .It consisted of some eggs, potatos and some vegetables along which some fruits, a yoghurt sweet and a croissant served along with a drink of choice. It was a simple but really filling breakfast.
I really liked the flights mood lighting even though it was a bright morning outside the lighting helped everyone catch up on some sleep during this red eye flight.
As we began our descent into the London the wing view could seen more clearly in daylight . I couldn't take my eyes off this stunning view.
We landed in Gatwick with a smooth landing and we got to the see the beautiful skybridge.
Definitely nice to have been able to fly on the upper deck! It really elevates the Economy experience...pun intended 😁
Having flown on the upper deck of A380s is multiple classes on several different carriers, I can definitely agree that it's a much more comfortable experience with the smaller cabins and the side bins are great and there's so much extra space!
Thanks for sharing!
How much was the difference? In hindsight I've learnt that it is usually worth the premium.
That WC is huge BTW!
Thanks for sharing this nice trip!
