I went to the Horn of Africa in December 2024 to some of the least visited places on Earth: Socotra, Somaliland, Djibouti and Eritrea.
That was my plan for the itinerary:
Keflavík to London Luton, Easyjet
London Luton to Belgrade, Wizzair
Belgrade to Doha, Qatar Airways, business class
Doha to Abu Dhabi, Qatar Airways, business class
Abu Dhabi to Socotra, Air Arabia
Socotra to Abu Dhabi, Air Arabia
Dubai to Hargeisa, FlyDubai, economy class
Hargeisa to Addis, Ethiopian, economy class
Addis to Djibouti, Ethiopian, economy class
Djibouti to Addis, Ethiopian, economy class
Addis to Jeddah, Saudia, economy class
Jeddah to Asmara, Fkynas, economy class
Asmara to Dubai, FlyDubai, business class
Dubai to Frankfurt, Emirates, business class
And here's what was eventually my itinerary:
Keflavík to London Luton, Easyjet
London Gatwick to Dubai, Emirates, economy class
Abu Dhabi to Socotra, Air Arabia
Socotra to Abu Dhabi, Air Arabia
Dubai to Hargeisa, FlyDubai, bu class
Hargeisa to Addis, Ethiopian, economy class

Asmara to Dubai, FlyDubai, business class
Dubai to Frankfurt, Emirates, business class
To start my journey I first had to get from my home airport of Keflavik, Iceland to Abu Dhabi. There are no direct flights between Iceland to Abu Dhabi (or Dubai). Options for connecting flights are endless. I was looking for the cheapest business class flight on a good airline. This was from Belgrade to Abu Dhabi with Qatar Airways, which was three to four times cheaper than from London or other major cities in Western Europe. To get to Belgrade I first took EasyJet to London. This is usually the cheapest flight to/from Iceland. I paid 92 € for this flight including an extra legroom seat, speedy boarding and a large cabin luggage.
As all passengers for the many early morning Icelandair flights had already been checked in, the check-in area was almost completely deserted.
There was zero waiting time at security.
There's a large duty free shop after security.
I had a capuccino and a marzipan croissant at my favorite café in the departure area.
Waiting time for passport control was about 10 seconds.
Although there were 22 departures between 6.00 and 8.00, there was only one between 8.00 and 10.00 and only seven between 10.00 and 12.00.
I had gotten to the gate less than two minutes before priority boarding started 45 minutes before departure.
Our plane was an A320, registration number G-EZOK, built in 2015.
Rows 12 and 13 are the emergency exit rows on this plane. Here's row 13:
Boarding was completed at 10.10. The flight was about two-thirds full.
An expected flight time of two hours and 30 minutes was announced.
Push-back was at 10.16 for a scheduled departure time of 10.20. We took off at 10.31.
EasyJet still has an on-board magazine.
If you turn it around and go to the last page you get the in-flight menu.
EasyJet buy-on-board menu is considerably more extensive than on some other low-cost airlines.
More of the BoB menu:
EasyJet has a remarkable new destination: Akureyri. This town, 385 kms to the North by road from Reykjavík, has some of the most beautiful locations as it's at the end of Iceland's longest fjord. The runway itself is directly on the fjord. If you fly out from Akureyri, try to have a window seat on the left side to have a view of the town.
There's of course no in-flight entertainment on EasyJet (except the on-board magazine) and there's no wi-fi so it's a good opportunity to read a book.
The rest of the flight was comfortable and uneventful.
We landed at Luton Airport at 12.51 and were at the gate at 12.57 for a scheduled arrival time of 13.20.
Wow, thanks for sharing this flight report and your upcoming trip reports. I cannot wait for the tourism bonuses of Somaliland and Socotra, have always been fascinated about Socotra.
Minus the expensive buy-on-board, Easyjet seems like a fine airline. A smooth experience all around with no wait for security or passport control, an empty row (I think from your photos), and an early arrival into Luton. Thanks for sharing!
Hello and thank you for your comment. EasyJet offers a reliable low-cost experience in Europe. If you have a flight from Keflavík between 9.00 and 15.00, you have a quick and uncrowded airport experience. Stay tuned for the flight reports about Socotra and Somaliand!
