Introduction

Hola Amigos!

This time I'm sharing a FR series on a trip I made to India three years ago (bear with me…I'm trying to clear my backlog as fast as I can).

So a good friend of mine was getting married in Mumbai, and this was going to be my first time in India. I didn't have a clue of how to plan my trip, where to go, for how long or with whom. I only knew this was my golden chance to go to through Dubai, which meant a ride on the A380.

So the very first thing that I bought and planned was my trip on Emirates. I checked the price difference picking a different city of arrival and the one of departure back to Madrid. The pricing remained the same, and so I chose two different cities to arrive and depart India to force myself to at least travel to these two cities.

I will not reveal the routing for dramatic effect.

So, without further ado, here goes the FR on my first A380 flight (weee!!)

Reaching Madrid Barajas and check in

I had spent the night before having some beers with a friend from Colombia, and I had to wake up early to buy some medicines (in case I got Delhi Belly and so on…). Once I was done with those last minute acquisitions, I took the Metro from my house to MAD.

The Metro took around 45 minutes to Terminal 4 where Emirates operates… There was already a bit of a queue but nothing too bad.

The check in agent was nice and dilligent (I had already done online check in to secure window seats), she asked me for a physical printout of my Indian Visa (I initially showed her the pdf on my phone), which I had printed anyways.

photo 20191130_120340-46063

With my BPs at hand I went to T4S to have some rest at the Neptuno Lounge.

photo 20191130_121331

I forgot to take any pictures of what I served myself. I spent most oof the time checking out the local fauna at that time of day.

photo 20191130_131543

A340s were still a thing back then…

Boarding the beast

I went at the advised boarding time to my gate (the only A380-capable gate at MAD), the boarding procedure struck me as very effective, considering the sheer amount of people that were to share the ride with me.

photo 20191130_133447

These letters you're reading cannot transmit appropiately how excited I was. The little 5-year old AvGeek inside of me was squealing with joy.

photo 20191130_135311photo 20191130_135340

The plane was SO DAMN BIG!

A small peek into the cockpit

The stairs to the VIP area…someday….

photo 20191130_135431

I was to be sit on the first cabin of the first floor, so I was going to miss the wing views, but I chose that location to maximise my connection time in DXB

photo 20191130_135435

The seats were starting to show their age and their legacy…but they were still more than good enough for the 6 hours between Madrid and Dubai.

We were provided a pillow, headphones and a blanket. These felt, okay. Not quite premium (and definetely not as cool as EY the first time I flew with them back in 2016).

photo 20191130_135723

Seatpocket contents…I find it silly EK has so much rubbish on the seatback but they didn't hand physical magazines.

photo 20191130_140924

A view to the puny A346 on our side…(boy they are sorely missed)

Menu's for the flight were handed out

Enroute to dubai!

Boarding of course took its time, I didn't care at all, I was just checking every single detail of the plane and try to enjoy each second of my flight as possible.

We were then good to go. I was impressed that our crew for the flight was composed of Spanish pilots (is this a thing with EK?).

We taxied to RWY 14L and headed towards Valencia to make our cross over the Mediterranean. Then on to Egypt and then across the Arabian Penninsula on to Dubai.

The I C E IFE was well stocked, I wouldn't be bored on this flight for sure. But for take off, Black Sabbath (one of my Dad's favourite bands) seemed fair: he would had been as excited as me if we were to fly together.

photo 20191130_143227

Enter text here…

While taking off, I noticed the size of the engines…WOW. The plane didn't feel as powerful as a 757 taking off, but it was not an A340-300 either…I just whaled its way into the sky.

Alas…it was a bit cloudy over Spain

photo 20191130_144806

The skies cleared while we flew over Valencia….I think I managed to spot Calpe and environs in Castellón Province.

photo 20191130_150800photo 20191130_150804

Then we were given our meals. I went with the meatballs. Nothing extraordinary, but it was a good meal.

photo 20191130_154113photo 20191130_155250

After then the mood lighting was on…

photo 20191130_164141

And we gently sailed over the dusk

photo 20191130_164224

I then made a little exploration…

I found these glass interesting, I had never noticed this detail

Distant peek into the cabin from the front toilet zone:

photo 20191130_165324

The toilet was clean, spacious and well appointed. Much better than toilets at IB's A350s for J class.

The camera feature is so cool. There are so many cool things to do with I C E.

photo 20191130_170809

We got our second meal just after passing over Egypt. It was meh.

And we made it to Dubai

photo 20191201_001141

Seeing so many A380s is mesmerising

photo 20191201_001515photo 20191201_001611

We unboarded and followed the signs to my gate to Mumbai, which implied a long bus rid under the army of A380s….

Conclusion

This first ride on the A380 was amazing. The plane itself is an experience and definitely has a WOW factor. Other than that, Emirates did set itself appart from other airlines I had flown before, but barely. I don't consider it to be way superior to AF or AA. I don't even think it's better than EY (back then) or QR. But I cannot complain. It was very good, just not the best.

MAD did the job as great as usual. DXB also did the job...or did it?

Stay tuned for the rest of the series!

Saludos ;)

Hola Chibcha, thank you for sharing this FR!

bear with me…I'm trying to clear my backlog as fast as I can

I have some from 2015-2016, so you aren’t as behind as others

    A340s were still a thing back then…

You should go to MUC, the LH A340 fleet is resurrected from the dead.

It just whaled its way into the sky.

Everything feels slow motion due to the size of the plane. Taxing feels like you aren’t even moving and regarding the take-off, it is not too much different feeling to the A343 and those little hair dryers.

I don't consider it to be way superior to AF or AA. I don't even think it's better than EY (back then) or QR. But I cannot complain. It was very good, just not the best.

Never flown EK, but just based on the meals shown, they offer a much more substantial tray (cheese and crackers are pretty much gone from any US carrier) and metal cutlery. While it’s not way ahead, it is still ahead. You don’t see too many 9 overall ratings on US carriers ;) The ME3 will always be strong to South Asia and Oceania from Europe, just not useful carriers from the US, would you want to do a 16-hour LAX-DXB in that seat?

Thanks again for sharing and I look forward to your drama in DXB :)

Yes I'm torn between riding the A340 once more and enduring LH's sub par product, or just acknowledge the changing times. Happily for me it seems I still have chances to ride the A380 once more in more decent airlines. Hopefully 2023 brings some chances for this.

You have a point. Although I didn't find the catering way better than what I had on LATAM earlier that year between South America and Madrid, and on AA transatlantic.

      Thanks for passing by, saludos!

    Delhi Belly

a physical printout of my Indian Visa

    the VIP area

XD

The seats were starting to show their age and their legacy

I think I managed to spot Calpe

Nothing extraordinary, but it was a good meal.

Hm! Otra sorpresa. No anda tan lejos de latam.

Lindo vuelo.

Totalmente.

      Saludos!

    Hola Chibcha!

That is such a perfect opportunity to go to India!

    So beautiful. RIP 😥

I was kinda surprised when I was T4! I sometimes forget there are (a few) other airlines besides Iberia + oneworld at T4. EK A380 Y is an overall good experience with one of the most spacious Y seats and legroom around and as you say, the A380 itself has a wow factor.

    Thanks for sharing!
