This flight was booked for $108, all covered with credit from 2022, as part of a Cincinnati-Islip/Long Island routing. It was booked before May 28 when Southwest still included two free checked bags.

Before leaving for CVG in the morning I'd checked the status of this flight on Flightradar, and the aircraft had been upgraded from a 737-800 to a 737 MAX. Once of the few instances of a good aircraft switch.
After arriving in Orlando I'd left the airport for a couple of hours in between flights. Before coming back to the airport I looked at the flight status again and saw that it was estimated to be around 20 minutes late. Southwest never updated the departure time and so it was a slight gamble, but I guessed that Flightradar would be more accurate and got back to the airport a little later.
Welcome back to Orlando International Airport.

It's a bit hard to see through the trees but their is a large plane model on the other side.

None of the departure boards at the airport had an updated late departure time, so I was a bit worried that it would end up being on time after all. Luckily I didn't need to check-in, since I had the boarding pass from Cincinnati, so it was just straight through security (which was very slow like last time) and onto the train.

Passing Virgin Atlantic and Air Canada Rouge on the way to the terminal where the flight would depart from.

Right next to the ISP gate was CC-BGD, a LATAM Chile 787-9 heading to Santiago de Chile.

Finally arrived at the gate around 15 minutes after schedule boarding time and boarding hadn't even started yet - Flightradar was right. Boarding was a bit of a mess. People were already standing around but they didn't announce groups when they started boarding and no one was quite sure where in the line they were meant to be.

I wasn't able to get a picture of our plane but it was N8860S, a 2.2 year old 737 MAX 8. The cabin was very different from the 737-700s on the last two flights. Seating was again a free-for-all.

One of the flight attendents was telling everyone that it was one of their new planes and bags need to be placed differently.

There was a literature comparment, USB-A and -C charging ports, and another seatback pocket as well as an adjustable headrest.

The literature pocket had a menu/entertainment info card, a safety card, and a sickness bag.

Unfortunately it also had someone's old packet of snacks.

There were also personal lights and vents.

The Boeing Sky Interior was on full display, making the flight seem a bit more exciting than it actually was.

Aircraft of the major 4 airlines, plus Air Canada Rouge and a special JetBlue livery passed by.

Someone was playing "The wheels on the bus go round and round" fairly loudly and without headphones, but thankfully that stopped after a few minutes and I heard the safety announcement (on the last two flights I didn't even hear it since there was so much noise) and it seemed a little more concise and informal than the standard US airline safety announcements. They also said that if using personal battery packs for charging, they had to be in full sight which I haven't heard before.
The lighting changed a couple of times as we waited for departure.

I had a look at the entertainment, which was the same as on the other flights except for a slightly different layout.

Although it said 0 minutes remaining (it had been 5 hours and 9 hours on the last flights), the map had the right duration.

With one final change of the lights were were Long Island-bound.

Passing by mostly Delta planes.

Sunset, palm trees, and Air Canada Rouge.

Two LATAM 787s now.

And we're off!

And there's the ocean!

Turns out that wasn't actually the ocean and it was a little further.

Once airborne the flight duration was corrected.

Someone was watching the Loud House and then Sesame Street again loudly and without headphones. I think it was actually the baby sitting in the row ahead of me, who soon started crying with her mum trying very hard to calm her down.
Before the service began, they announced the forward lavatories were out of order.
Service, as on the other flights, started with the crew taking drink orders. I asked for hot chocolate and a can of water. The flight attendent seemed confused when I asked for a can of water and he asked if I meant a can of coke, I again asked for a can of water, then he realized what I meant and asked if I wanted ice with it. The drinks were brought a few minutes later.

The hot chocolate was pretty good, though it wasn't mixed that well and there was a lot of chocolate on the bottom of the cup.
Snacks were also served out, though I didn't take any. It was the same crew member serving out snacks and he was quite friendly, he gave some extra snacks to the crying baby's mum and asked if that did the trick when he came back (it had), and also asked everyone if they wanted something else while he collected the trash.
A little while later I went to the back and took a picture of the cabin.

I also used the bathroom, it was clean and not quite as small as on the 737-700.
I asked for some apple juice from the same flight attendent who had been doing the last service, he said, "Apple juice! First hot chocolate, then water…" (he was joking and then clarified that it was very good to stay hydrated).

Before landing the Live TV started freezing up a bit for a few seconds at a time, though it had worked well until then.

It turned out the crying baby was actually pretty nice, she was waving to everyone including me later on. Then she dropped her cup in front of me which her mum apologized for several times, but it wasn't really an issue.
The lights were brightened, then darkened, before landing.

When landing it really didn't look anything like New York City. It could have been any medium-level city in the US.
Welcome to Long Island!

Someone exlaimed, "We made it!" after landing.
There was only one other plane at the airport, another Southwest 737.

They announced that this was the termination of this flight number and all passengers must deplane here (the flight number is just MCO-ISP though, it doesn't start somewhere else) like it was a train. They also told everyone to take all their things because once you exit the plane you can't come back on. It reminded me of the Tube in London.
People got up as soon as the seatbelt sign was turned off, but it was another 5 minutes or so until the gate opened.

The captain had come out to see everyone off, and I was saying thank you to the crew he told me that I'd be flying the plane next time.
And there's our aircraft.

ISP was a great airport, small and peaceful. To get to the baggage claim everyone had to walk by security and through the check-in area.

The baggage claim area also wasn't huge.

Southwest is the main airline in Islip and their signage was everywhere.

Bags came moderately fast.

That concludes this flight report and the next one will be a bit more interesting: Qantas from JFK to Auckland and continuing on to Sydney.
Hi VM, thanks for sharing a report on the MAX 8, I know there are many out there but this is the first I have read one.
The cabin looks sleek, color wise at least, it caught my eye on the cover photo 😅. And it is especially nice to see the USB-C charger ports. Always frustrates me when there are none these days, as well, I guess blame Apple for making one faster than the other.
Oh no 😂, thankfully they stopped. Would have a brutal flight if they hadn’t. I hope it was the kid in front of you at least???
I had to do some research on this, and it’s interesting to see that LATAM offers up to 2x Daily from Orlando to GRU, and 2x weekly to SCL on 787s. I’ll be fascinated to see if they might add Lima going forward, as the GRU works seems to be working (from a basic search).
The can of water is certainly interesting but I love the little Southwest thing that goes on top of the hot chocolate. Why can’t more airlines do that 😅.
The crew seemed quite nice overall, I love when they make witty comebacks like that personally, and combine that with the captain seeing everyone off, not bad! You certainly got lucky with the aircraft swap, that’s for sure. Will be interesting to see where the airline goes in the future, as I have heard Iceland flights are on the Horizon. Anyways, you’ve sort of convinced me to check out SW, but I’ll defo make sure to hopefully* get on the Max.
Thanks for sharing, and very much looking forward to your Qantas flights. Sounds like a long one, so excited to see how QF holds up! Have a nice day!
I actually didn't have a good picture of the plane for the cover so I had the cabin as second choice lol. But yep, it is a nice looking cabin and USB-A and C is pretty rare so definitely good that they have it.
I'm honestly not sure that it was the baby who was listening to it, I feel like it must have been but maybe there was an adult just really likes the song?
It looks like LATAM is restarting LIM-MCO in October but with LATAM Peru A320s, I actually didn't know they'd stopped. Going to a 787 might be a bit of a challenge and it would probably also need some scheduling changes to get a 787 from LATAM Chile
I really like it too! Every extra bit of airline branding is always good and the little heart is nice and cute as well
Definitely were, they seemed genuinely friendly
Yep they aren't doing too well nowadays so there could be some major issues. I didn't know about the Iceland plans and that seems like a very risky move. The market is crowded and even with an Icelandair codeshare they'll struggle to avoid going the way of WOW and now PLAY
If it's possible definitely try to get it over the -700 and -800, you can look at my previous two FRs and the -700 cabin is so much worse
I just got to Sydney a few hours ago! Still a bit of traveling over the next week but I'll have the QF4 review(s) up as soon as I can
Nice to have caught one of the 7M8 with USB ports, it's a gamble as there are still many that don't have power. I guess when the new cabins come out it will be more common to have in-seat power, BUT of course that will come with less legroom womp womp
Thanks for sharing!
Yep this was one of the newer ones, I believe the old ones haven't been updated yet. And less legroom will probably be worth it since it's not a massive reduction.
Thanks for reading!
