After I one week in Asia, I flew back to Germany on the Sunday evening. I arrived at the airport at 18:48pm. My flight to Helsinki was leaving at 20:55pm, roughly two hours before departure time. There were some passengers checking their luggage and I queued in front of the counters for around 20 minutes. I got the paper boarding passes for both flights. My hand carry luggage was also weighted and the cabin approved tag was tired on it.

I received the paper boarding passes for the two flights all the way to Munich.

At the arrival hall, there was an event called A Moment to Purr – Giant Interactive Cat Encounter. A giant cat with movable ears and tail was placed there from 3 April - 31 May 2026 to welcome all passengers.

Then I headed back to the departure floor and went straight for the security check and immigration.

I went to McDonald and brought a shogun burger. The departure time was a bit tricky because I had no time to have dinner beforehand.

My flight would be departed from gate 36 tonight.

I was in group 5 of the boarding group. The schedule boarding time was at 20:15pm

My ride to Helsinki. Airbus A350-900, OH-LWS. The plane was delivered to Finnair in December 2021 and has the same seat configuration with my previous flight.

At 20:05pm, I started queuing in front of the gate and 20 minutes later boarding was commenced. After I went through the boarding gate, a ground staff came to me and weighted my hand luggage with his hand.

My seat 33L, this was the third row of the economy class. Finnair sold the first 6 rows ABC and JKL as Economy Comfort seats. These seats have more row pitch, providing 34 inches comparing with 31 inches in standard economy seat. It also has a comfier headrest. However, coat hook and universal socket were still missing. Blanket was placed on the stair but no pillow. With the experience from pervious flight, I brought a small cushion with me.

Back of the economy comfort seat. USB-C port was also available which was definitely an upgrade from the last flight.

Seat pocket items included sea sick bag, safety card and ear buds.

Then I went through the menu. Basically two meals would be provided for the flight.

underneath the monitor there was a tablet holder which can be released by the latch on the left side.

I took the time to eat my burger and it turned out that the middle seat remained empty with a man sitting on the aisle seat.

At 20:58, an announcement from the flight deck that the preparation was completed and flight time would be 13 hours. 2 minutes later, pushback was started and safety demonstration video was played.

At 21:17pm, we took off from runway 07R.

12 minutes after takeoff, seatbelt sign was turned off and the cabin light was turned on. I went through the movie library and decided to watch the mickey 17 movie.

At the same time, WiFi was also available.

At 21:50pm, notification on the screen informing us the meal service  would begin soon.

12 minutes later I received the meal from the crew. I chose the egg noodle with beef and vegetables, also packed in the cardboard box. Taste was just ok but the fusilli was far below my expectation. I had again a blue berry juice for the drink.

At 22:30pm, seat belt sign was turned on and last for 10 minutes as we were experiencing some turbulence. I looked out o f the window and saw frequent lightning. We were flying over Guizhou province in China.

At 23:00pm, I was getting a bit sleepy and because of the turbulence, I could not sleep well and I woke up in just 20 minutes. Seat belt sign was switched on for several times. The seat recline button design was new to me, but somehow it did not work.

At 23:44pm, I visited the lavatory in middle of the aircraft. No amenity stuff was offered in it.

At 23:54pm, cabin lights was dimmed.

When I finished the movie 30 minutes later, I checked that we were flying over Qinghai province. Then I turned off the screen and tried to get some sleep.

By the time I woke up, it was already 6:00am. I slept for a good 5 hours and 40 minutes. I tapped the screen and we were already reaching Georgia. There was still 4 hours to Helsinki.

15 minutes later, I started watching the second movie, Ballerina.

At the same time, I placed an order for apple juice from the screen.

In 2 minutes, my order arrived. This time it was pretty quick.

At 7:16am, connecting flight information was available. My flight to Munich had been assigned at gate 31D and we our arrival gate was gate 46.

About 10 minutes later, the cabin light was gradually turned on with the colored LED lights on the ceiling.

A couple of minutes later, meal service notification popped up on the right side of the screen.

The cabin was getting brighter with the LED lighting.

At 7:40am, the cabin crew handed over the cardboard box to me. There was only one choice and I had coffee with milk for the drink.

At 8:14am, I finished the movie and the crew were coming back and collect the tray. We were by that moment flying above Romania.

Then I started to watch the third movie of the flight, Companion.

At 9:25am, I visited the lavatory again and while I was in the lavatory, the announcement from cockpit that we were half an hour to landing. Landing time was estimated at 5:05am, with clear sky and morning fog in Helsinki.

I looked at the flight map when I returned to my seat, we were flying over Gulf of Riga.

I switched over to the front camera on the screen.

At local time 5:05am, we touched down on RWY15 of Helsinki airport. Total flight time was 12 hours and 48 minutes.

After a short taxiing, we parked at gate 46, the same gate where I departed a week ago.

Total flight route. The flight path was very similar to the previous flight from Helsinki to Hong Kong.

Conclusion

The Economy Comfort seat is actually quite good for long haul flight and I had no problem in stretching my legs. Catering is really the weakness for Finnair. Apart from that it was overall a good flight. Not able to fly over Russia is having a huge damage to the airlines and Helsinki is losing the advantage as a transit hub.
