The flight SQ478 departs from Terminal 3 at 1:30 AM. There are significant number of longhaul outbound flights during this hour. So the terminal itself felt busy and full of energy.
We took advantage of the transit in Changi voucher (SGD 20) provided by SIngapore Airlines, and used it for lounge access at the Ambassador Lounge. The lounge has variety of food and drink, and has got free shower. What else to ask for.
Load factor for today is estimated to be over 90%
Today's aircraft is 9V-SMC, which was delivered in May 2016. Surprised by how time flies.
Take a look at the cabin, lighting and seat pocket content. The seat itself is spacious and wide, similar to what Qatar's 359 Y class has got to offer. Warm towels and menu were distributed by the crew.
We departed on schedule. Light supper was served. To be honest, I was caught offguard by the presentation and content of this supper. This is unexpected on a well reputed Singapore Airlines long haul flight. With limited choices of beverages and I have no idea why they bothered to keep it a tray service. Presentation would have looked better if they handled it like QR. After the light supper, the cabin lights were dimmed. Cabin crew came occasionally handing out cups of water.
It was bumpy through out the whole flight and it seems to be the norm when flying over Indian Ocean.
No amenity kit was distributed. You will have to approach the crew and ask for one. I asked for one, crew handed to me after 30 minutes. However the content does not include eye shade (which is the whole point?). But you know what never mind.
Meal service commenced 2 hours prior to landing. There was a choice between western breakfast and Indonesian style beef noodle. I opted for the latter.
Well, the flavor itself was not bad. But again, being the "meal" of this long haul flight, SQ is definitely slacking. Meal service on regional Asian flights (and routes by SQ themselves) would've easily win. I was really surprised as many years ago I had the opportunity to fly CGK-SIN-HKG on SQ; and everything was impeccable. But now? I am confused.
We landed at JNB around 30 minutes before scheduled arrival.
After reading @TerryYong's report and other Taiwanese aviation enthusiasts' comments on the same route, I am glad that I wasn't wrong about this being a slacking and underwhelming flight for such a major airlines as SQ. And this is coming from a person who genuinely enjoys flying in Y class and always finishes his inflight meal…
Crew members were friendly and A350s are definitely amazing to fly in. But the meal service? A big let down.
I was expecting a better meal service on the return flight (atleast it is a proper lunch + breakfast), but spoiler alert, nope, SQ still slacking.
After enjoying an amazing meal service from JNB-LLW (2 hr flight), I was definitely regretting not choosing SAA for the long haul sector.
