return to asia

I suppose it was too much to ask for without a major mishap on one of my trips.  It's part of why I avoided writing the rest of this trip report for so long.  TLDR: I had a very painful flight cancellation that ruined the return trip for me and forced me into a very last-minute, inconvenient routing on Star Alliance instead of what was originally an aspirational flight.  I won't get into details, but at least this was a lie-flat trip back to the US.

bangkok Suvamabhumi airport (bkk)

Thai Airways has a massive row of business class check-in counters right by the fast track entrance.

photo 20240106_160815-58708

All premium cabin passengers, as well as various other groups of passengers are eligible for fast track, which saves a bit of time.

thai airways business class lounge

The Thai Airways business class lounge was easy enough to find right after security.  Even though it was a full week into January, Christmas decorations were still up.

photo 20240106_163210

The lounge is one very long corridor with more or less the same seating throughout.  Unfortunately, despite plenty of seats, the outlet situation was not so great.

There are various food or beverage stations found throughout, such as this small buffet below.

photo 20240106_163307-66096

There is a bigger main buffet area with bar seating and more traditional tables.

photo 20240106_163904

The buffet wasn't very exciting, with a few hot and cold options.

You can get miso soup to order from the kitchen counter though.

photo 20240106_164718

The alcohol selection varied throughout the lounge, from self serve wine . . .

photo 20240106_163613

. . . to staffed bars.  The bars had much better options to drink, which were about average for J lounges.

photo 20240106_163712

I spent some time in this lounge and had dinner before switching over to the Singapore Lounge (right around when the last SQ flight was scheduled to depart).

silverKris lounge (BKK)

The SilverKris Lounge at BKK can be found opposite of Gate D7.

photo 20240106_203857

It's a smaller, but still spacious area with classy decor.

photo 20240106_203900

I went to the lounge after the last SQ flight began boarding so it was almost entirely empty.

I thought the food options were ever so slightly better than in the Thai Airways lounge, albeit without the made-to-order soup option.

You do have options for Asahi or Singha beer, poured using the famous Japanese beer pouring machines.

photo 20240106_204023

A central bar offered various beverages.

photo 20240106_204034-60839

The wine selection was on par with the Thai Airways lounge, and not terribly exciting.

photo 20240106_204453

I asked for a glass of champagne and when the bartender saw me taking a picture of the wine selection, he proactively placed the bottle of champagne on the bar so I can take a picture.  H. Lanvin is a decent champagne for a J lounge–I didn't take notes on the Thai offerings, but I remember that the Lanvin was better than what was offered there.

photo 20240106_204522

I left the SQ lounge at 11pm when it closed and went to a Thai Airways lounge closer to my gate.  No report for that lounge–it was packed despite the late hour and the amenities were worse than the main Thai lounge.

My flight to CDG was on HS-TKR, a 10 years-old Boeing 777-300ER.

Boarding was a bit chaotic with a massive rush when they announced it at 11:50pm (25 minutes after scheduled).

photo 20240106_232034-17755

TG offers staggered business class seats spread across two J cabins on its 777-300ERs.  There was no first class cabin on this plane though I understand now Thai has a few 777s with first class flying select routes.

photo 20240106_235401-58223

I was in 16B, one of the aisle-adjacent window seats in the forward cabin.  By the time I bought this ticket this was the last window seat left.  You can see it's quite exposed.

photo 20240106_235415

The seats are a bit dated, with a small IFE, somewhat narrow footwell, and rather limited storage.  A single power outlet can be found below the window-adjacent counter.

Pillow, bedding, and slippers are already waiting for you at the seat.

photo 20240106_235601

The slippers were fine, comparable to normal (non-luxury) hotel slippers.

photo 20240107_000136

The amenity was also already waiting for you at the seat and contained the usual goodies.  As seem to be more standard in Asia, a small shoehorn is provided.

photo 20240107_021027

I was quickly welcomed onboard with a hot towel.  Perhaps due to the lateness of the flight (or the lateness of boarding), I was not offered a predeparture beverage.  In any case, boarding finished at 12:16am and we pushed back at 12:19am.  Very efficient despite the late start!  I really don't understand why here in the US we are absolutely the slowest to board and push back .  After quite a bit of taxing we took off at 12:39am.

photo 20240106_235559

Here's a look at the menu, nothing exciting, but all-in-all a pretty decent selection of food for business class.  I'd take this over US airline offerings certainly.

Service began 20 minutes after takeoff with a ramekin of nuts.

photo 20240107_010058

I had a glass of Laurent Perrier to start.

photo 20240107_010543

My apologies for the blurriness of the food pictures next–the lighting was really poor.  The amuse bouche were: 1) smoked duck stuffed with herb cream cheese and 2) Thai-style spicy tuna salad on crunchy cucumber.  They were fairly decent.

photo 20240107_011210

For the appetizer, there was only one option: Thai-style spicy quinoa salad with crab meat and ebiko.  I opted to have garlic bread with it.  Both the appetizer and the bread were decent.

photo 20240107_012659

For my main, I opted for tiger prawns in Panaeng Curry.  Maybe due to the altitude or the fact that it's reheated, but this turned out to be the weakest course.  For those who may be concerned, it was not spicy (or at most the mildest of spiciness).

photo 20240107_014041

For dessert, I had the coconut panna cotta with Tab-tim krob, which was okay.  Part of the problem with this meal was that I had just spent 4 days in Thailand eating the best of its street food and restaurants–it's going to be hard to compare.  For this reason, I always avoid eating the Japanese option when departing from Japan.

photo 20240107_015316

After my meal I asked for a cup of chamomile tea.

photo 20240107_015635

The FA helped me set up the mattress pad, which was a bit thin, but better than just having the seat.

photo 20240107_005714-45054

I quickly went to the lavatory afterwards to freshen up a bit before sleeping.  Not much in the way of amenities here and like all Boeing bathrooms, rather tight.

photo 20240107_050236

I slept reasonably well and woke up a bit before breakfast time.  Oddly enough, lights were turned back on with 2 hours 22 minutes left in-flight.  Often airlines would leave it to 90 minutes or sometimes even one hour before landing to maximize sleep.

I opted for the steamed chicken thigh for my breakfast main and also had a croissant and a rather odd-looking variant of the youtiao as my bread.  Breakfast wasn't bad either.

photo 20240107_104920

The rest of the flight was very uneventful.  The only thing that happened was FAs stopped by to collect headphones 30 minutes before landing (perhaps taking a leaf out of American's playbook?).

We landed at 6:51am and was at our gate 7am, slightly early despite a late departure.

photo 20240107_130807

Unfortunately, this was the only picture I managed to take of the plane–with views being blocked on departure and arrival.  Surprisingly, EU passport control was very quick this morning so I was onto the next part of my journey without delay.

Conclusion

Lounge: Thai Airways's flagship lounge is a massive affair with various seats, drink stations, and buffets. Given catering costs in Thailand, I'm surprised the airline doesn't offer a more robust food selection in its flagship business lounge. I wouldn't show up early for the lounge, but it's a perfectly fine way to pass some time. I would recommend the SilverKris lounge over Thai's own lounges under the assumption the SilverKris lounge isn't packed--it usually is before the SQ departures.

Cabin & Seat: I'm not a fan of staggered seats in general and these are particularly dated. They both lack storage space and are a bit narrow at the same time. The aisle-adjacent seat is also very exposed. TG has always had rather odd seat selection for its cabin, and hopefully they'll update these if they keep the 77W in the fleet for many more years.

Service: Service was pleasant and efficient, but nothing extraordinary. I appreciate help with a quasi-turndown service and the FAs were attentive and responsive whenever I needed anything.

Meal & Catering: The meals were perfectly fine, just not all that exciting. For an Asian palate they're a bit bland, but as I mentioned, I had just had 4 days of the best food in Thailand so my judgment may not have been entirely objective.

Bottom Line: Thai doesn't offer a very competitive business class product, but at least it's direct-aisle access with reasonable catering and service. If I were to pick an airline to fly in J between BKK and CDG, I'd probably prefer AF, but that's primarily on the strength of better seats.

  • The review is listed as an A350, but the review is actually for a 777-300ER.

  • Hi George, thanks for sharing this look at TG’s long-haul product.

You can get miso soup to order from the kitchen counter though.

What an unexpected option at a TG Lounge, must be very proud of their miso soup^^ The lounge looks a lot better post-renovation. BKK is one of the best for *A since also BR and TK lounges.

By the time I bought this ticket this was the last window seat left.  You can see it's quite exposed.

These cabins are about as bad as OZ’s B772s with the same vintage Solstys product and these aisle seats are probably some of the most exposed seats on the market You can probably feel the breeze on your face every time someone walks down the aisle. The placement of the USBs below the monitor makes little sense with no where to put down a device nearby to charge. With the hodgepodge of aircraft types and hard products, TG is a lottery.

a rather odd-looking variant of the youtiao

Was wondering what that butterfly shaped bread was, never seen youtiao into that shape. Overall, the food looks above average, but it’s clear they still have opportunities to improve to be competitive with the likes of SQ/BR from this region. I'm surprised they did a full meal service for the first meal despite the late departure time, but I guess it maps onto dinner time at destination.

    • Thanks for reading NGO85!

The lounge looks a lot better post-renovation.

This is definitely better than it was pre-renovation. That said, I've heard the new first class lounge is more mediocre.

With the hodgepodge of aircraft types and hard products, TG is a lottery.

Sometimes I wonder if it's a Star Alliance specialty, look at Lufthansa these days.

Overall, the food looks above average, but it’s clear they still have opportunities to improve to be competitive with the likes of SQ/BR from this region.

I think that's spot on--if you're doing a one stop somewhere, it makes no sense to pick TG over SQ or BR within Star Alliance, especially given that TG doesn't even price very competitively.

  • Hey George, very good report as always!

I suppose it was too much to ask for without a major mishap on one of my trips.

Yikes, sorry to hear! Yeah, it's rare for these epic RTW type of complex routings to fully work out without some sort of issue popping up somewhere. Sorry you missed out on whatever airline/product you had originally booked. It's a bummer when these things happen, especially when you're an airline enthusiast. Hopefully you'll get a chance to make up for it at some point!

Unfortunately, despite plenty of seats, the outlet situation was not so great.

Always something I judge lounges on...a good lounge makes it easy to charge up

There was no first class cabin on this plane though I understand now Thai has a few 777s with first class flying select routes.

Yup, they got 3 brand new 77Ws during the pandemic with new J and F cabins to replace the formerly retired A380/747 Flagships (since all of a sudden they no longer had any First cabins in the fleet...and I guess they weren't ready to drop F just yet...probably something to do with infamous TG corruption as well haha).

You can see it's quite exposed.

The fake-window-actually-an-aisle seats in the staggered config aren't great unless you're travelling with the person across the aisle (which I usually am). The true window seats are great though...when you can get them, which obviously wasn't the case with all the last minute changes.

The only thing that happened was FAs stopped by to collect headphones 30 minutes before landing (perhaps taking a leaf out of American's playbook?).

Ugh, I hate that about AA...so annoying. And then they give you those awful earbuds they give out in coach and you can barely hear anything.

    Thanks for sharing!

    • Thanks for reading, Kevin!

Hopefully you'll get a chance to make up for it at some point!

We'll see--it was a sui generis product at an unprecedented (and limited time) low rate to give you a hint.

I guess they weren't ready to drop F just yet...probably something to do with infamous TG corruption as well haha).

I was under the impression they had to have first class so that if members of the royal family travel commercial, it would be available.

The true window seats are great though...when you can get them, which obviously wasn't the case with all the last minute changes.

In this kind of situation I'm usually thankful if I can get a seat at all.
