Hamburg Airport

I accessed Hamburg Airport using the S1 S-Bahn train. At the time of this trip there is work on going so the S1 S-Bahn is only available for one stop where you need to change to the S4 S-Bahn train to get into the city centre.

I took the elevator (or lift) up to the entrance to Hamburg Airport Terminal 1, where Eurowings fly from. I had a short walk across a crossing and then I was into the building, it wasn't a long journey by any means.

I went to the Eurowings check in desk to get a boarding pass, there was a bit of a mess at the que, there was a counter for the London Heathrow flight (EW-7460), but no one was manning the desk, I had to re-line up at the Priority lane (I'm not a regular Eurowings flyer so I don't have such a perk) but it was unnecessary hassle, I could have saved myself a good 10 minutes or so.

I got myself a boarding pass, which came with a nice bonus… I was due to sit at the back of the plane in Seat 29F, but I was automatically on the system moved to Seat 11F- an emergency exit row- Excellent!!!

I got through security nice and easily, it helped that I was stopped going through the que for main security and hustled with a few other passengers via the Priority Security lane which was really empty, so that was another bonus- case of right place & right time!

I went airside and did some plane spotting, a last few images of aircraft action from the Schengen Gates, as I walked down to the Gate area where I would be getting my London bound flight. Once the exact gate was announced, it was straight to the Passport Checkpoint for exiting the Schengen Zone, and I was stamped out to get back to the UK.

I used a "Hamburg Card" for travel around Hamburg and I used it to get some discounts around the city, but I did find that the Airport has a Lounge which you can get a small discount off if you buy access at the Airport, I opted not to do this on this trip as I had gone airside just over an hour before my flight.

Eurowings EW7460 (HAM-LHR)

My flight for this evening to London Heathrow would be operated by Eurowings Airbus A320neo, D-AENH. This aircraft was delivered to Eurowings brand new on February 15th 2023, this A320neo wears a black liner around the cockpit windows as well as a sticker promoting the environmental improvements of the A320neo over its predecessor. Its currently the newest A320neo in the Eurowings fleet (at the time of writing) as their subsequent brand new Airbus planes have been Airbus A321neo aircraft, though more of these A320neos are on order.

Boarding with Eurowings occurs in two Groups. Boarding Group 1 is for the frequent flyers in the Miles & More (and other applicable Star Alliance schemes) and those flying in Premium cabin packages. Boarding Group 2 is everyone else, including me!

The cabin was the same as my previous experiences in October 2016, there was solid legroom at the Emergency Exit Row- standard, and I was also impressed by the red coloured mood lighting being used by the A320neo on this cabin. The holder at the top of the seat back contained a sick bag, inflight café menu and safety card.

We pushed back a few minutes behind, making our actual departure time (according to FR-24) 18:12pm (local time) and our total flight time would be 1hr 25min, bringing us into London at 18:35pm local time. The scheduled times are up above in the description of this flight.

It was a pretty dull and cloudy departure from Hamburg Airport, but things would brighten up as we headed for our cruising altitude.

Flying the short international hop from Hamburg to London at the time we departed saw us fly during the "Golden Hour", allowing for some amazing pictures during our race across the North Sea!

I know its a short flight, but after my outbound flight the previous morning, I was curious and keen to try the Currywurst sausage!

It was worth Є7.90c (£6.75p) for the hot snack alone, but there is an opportunity with it with Fries as well for Є12 (£10.25p). I rounded the currywurst off with a can of cola as I was expecting it to be hot in temperature from the sauce on the sliced up Bratwurst. I personally enjoyed it very much and I would try the full Currywurst-Fries combo on a longer flight in the future. But this was just manageable on a Hamburg-London flight!

The food took a good 15 minutes to get ready, by the time I had finished it we were approaching the Eastern coastline of England, and starting our decent. The crew came around and did a final clear up of the cabin. As we began to descend and close in on England the golden hour began to disperse and the clouds took over…

Our arrival brought the flight in over London which allowed for some nice views of the city centre, from the second image of this line-up below you can see the River Thames with the o2 Arena (Millennium Dome) and London City Airport showcasing an unmistaken cityline of where you are!

As we flew towards London Heathrow the landmarks passed by and the suburbs of Western London began to take over as we closed into Hounslow.

Arrival into London Heathrow took us onto Runway 27L, passing over the famous Myrtle Avenue plane spotting location.

We came off the runway and back tracked along the taxiway to Terminal 2 where the Star Alliance airlines & a few outliers base at London Heathrow, not an unusual practice until we got to Terminal 2 and pulled up onto a stand for the Satellite Terminal 2B!

I grabbed some last pictures of the Eurowings A320neo cabin from my exit row once most of the other passengers had left the plane, by the time I got my bag and left the plane I was one of the last people off the aircraft.

I was overall happy with Eurowings having not flown with them since 2016, it was nice to get reacquainted with them and the experience was overall a good one, the only snag being the hassle at the check in desks in Hamburg, but that subsided once I got given the free seat upgrade!

At Terminal 2B there's no monorail to the main Terminal 2, unlike the Terminal 5 complex, but as its only a ten minute walk under ground, its not a big hassle, I even got this pretty cool photo as we passed a massive glass window separating us from the Airside departures.

Conclusion

Eurowings is a nice budget airline product for trips to and from Germany if you don't fancy flying the ULCC options (Ryanair or easyJet) and if you are someone with a Lufthansa FFP, then it can even be beneficial for you. Whilst I liked them enough for a one hour flight, I am not sure I'd be sold in flying them on a 3-4 hour flight.
