What's better than a flight?

A FREE FLIGHT!!!

A very interesting talk on teaching methodologies is taking place in Santiago.

What are the chances that my school will pay for me and two other colleagues to attend the event? There's no precedent of such thing.

I can not believe my ears when the principal says YES, GO!!

So, here we are: Claudia, Romina, and yours truly, ready for our trip. The three of us teach the same subject, but what makes this trip particularly exciting is that we're having some free time after the talk, which for the ladies means… SHOPPING!!

and for me…

God, help me. :'''(

ZAL

At the time of this flight…
photo img_20170818_154516

…only two airlines land at Pichoy (ZAL)
photo img_20170818_154526

This will change in January 2018…
photo img_20170818_154530

…when JetSmart, the new ULCC…
photo img_20170818_154452

…starts flying to Valdivia, too.
photo img_20170818_154458

But ZAL is prepared to face any challenge. They have added a second check-in kiosk!! XDDD No, really, that’s more than enough for the local needs.
photo img_20170818_154625

My colleagues have not arrived, yet. I’ll go through security now that nobody is queuing, and wait for them airside. Whoa! Deja vu! Haven't I seen buckets like that at SCL, too? It looks like this rainy winter has wreaked havoc everywhere. LATAM’s passengers have already boarded. Their flight must be about to leave.
photo img_20170818_154940

Yes! Pretty good timing. There it goes.
photo img_20170818_155001photo img_20170818_155044

At Pichoy you can board using the jetbridge at gate 1…
photo img_20170818_154932

…or (an avgeek's favorite) on foot. I wonder what it depends on. The weather, only?
photo img_20170818_155121

Passengers start pouring into the boarding room. When my colleagues arrive, Claudia engages in lively chatter with that man talking on the phone on the right. They used to be colleagues years ago because Claudia is a US-trained helicopter pilot!
photo img_20170818_155055

And this is what ZAL’s guts look like. They’re probably trying to fix the leak.
photo img_20170818_155230

And there comes CC-AMP…
photo vlc2017-11-08-23h38m04s896

…hitting the brakes.
photo vlc2017-11-08-23h38m26s838photo vlc2017-11-08-23h38m48s489

As if hit by lightning, everyone jumps to their feet and scramble around the bucket.
photo img_20170818_165002

Meanwhile, CC-AMP slowly reaches the apron…
photo img_20170818_164344photo img_20170818_164407

…and taxies towards our window.
photo img_20170818_164419

Its fat A319 nose…
photo img_20170818_164450

…gets bigger…
photo img_20170818_164501

…and bigger…
photo img_20170818_164511

…and bigger.
photo img_20170818_164519

Until it almost touches our own.
photo img_20170818_164521

At this point Claudia, who's standing by my side, says "The captain is a woman." I am like "What?" I look carefully, but I can't see the people inside the cockpit. Then I zoom the camera into the cockpit window as much as possible, but I still see nothing.
photo img_20170818_164600

"How on earth can you know that?!" I ask. "Easy," she says. "Her earrings sparkled." Gosh. How was she able to see that? Well, that's why she is a pilot and I am not!!
photo img_20170818_164719

Boarding

We are not in a hurry at all…
photo img_20170818_170110

…so we wait and stand almost at the end of the queue.
photo img_20170818_170119_1

Nothing like these "scenic" jetways…
photo img_20170818_170153_1

…ideal for the mandatory patriotic shot. Actually, I'm not being patriotic. I'm just impressed that they've finally changed the flag! The old one was tearing to pieces!
photo img_20170818_170204_1

While being held here for a moment…
photo img_20170818_170209_2

…I keep trying to see the captain's earrings. I give up.
photo img_20170818_170258

So many times boarding at ZAL, and this is the first time I notice that the jetbridge is a bit more sophisticated than the average: it has doors, not a metal curtain.
photo vlc2017-11-08-23h40m56s261

Almost everybody is sitting and the hand luggage is orderly placed in the bins by the time we board. I can even see some space available in the bins at the front. Sometimes you take these things for granted, but this is something I really missed in a recent trip abroad.
photo img_20170818_170618

A much needed visit to the restroom before we leave.
photo img_20170818_170920

Is that a drawer? I didn't check. Now I’m curious!
photo img_20170818_170912

Well, that light means something. I’d better go back to my seat.
photo img_20170818_170902

The galley. Dios mío! That newspaper over there is Las Últimas Noticias (lit. The Latest News). It used to be respectable, but nowadays it’s the best example of Chilean yellow press… of the worst kind. Nothing but showbiz and sensationalism.
photo img_20170818_170940_3

View from my row.

New BOB menu!

Here’s a nice surprise. I was expecting a new menu in September (from what I overheard when a FA was talking to a passenger in my previous flight), but it’s already here in August!
photo img_20170818_172928photo img_20170818_173247

The word sandwich is strangely challenging for the average Chilean citizen. Some can't even deal with its plural form! The words there should be nuestros sandwiches ("our sandwiches").
photo img_20170818_173013_1
The thing is, I will try the marraqueta version. Bread is a staple in the Chilean diet (that's why we tend to be fat), and marraqueta is one of the most (if not THE most) popular kinds of bread here. We also give it other names, like pan batido, or pan francés (I wonder if there really is some reason for it to be called French bread)

Too bad the descriptions in the menu are only in Spanish. My sandwich contains smoked salami, spinach, olive paste, and cheddar cheese.

A piscola? My dad used to love piscolas. It’s pisco and Coca Cola.
photo img_20170818_173129

There are the classics, too…
photo img_20170818_173313

…and a variety of additions.
photo img_20170818_173328photo img_20170818_173400

And look at this! For the first time Sky has started selling earbuds, charging cables, and even power banks… and Brazilian Natura products, very popular in Chile!
photo img_20170818_173449

This month’s issue of the inflight magazine…
photo img_20170818_173745

…advertises the beauty of the south of the country, more specifically, Malalcahuello hot springs.
photo img_20170818_173822

Ah! The trolley comes at last! I gasp at the size of the sandwich. You get the whole marraqueta. I was expecting only half of it, because that’s the usual portion we eat at home. Well, this marraqueta in particular is a bit smaller than the one you find at your local bakery, but it still makes for a large sandwich!
photo img_20170818_175133

Inside, all the ingredients as promised, and all of them look fresh, especially the spinach. I take a bite. Mmmm!!! Wonderful!! Exquisito!!
photo img_20170818_175326

I usually post a good deal of aerials, and I was getting ready for an intense photographic session when I reserved the seats for the three of us: I picked the window seat, of course!
photo seats

But it so happens that Romina, the youngest one of us, is flying for the first time ever! I don't have the heart to take away from her the chance to behold the mountains that I admire so much, so I’ll make do with this little bit of snow this time.
photo img_20170818_182502

Never mind. I’m travelling with two chatty female teachers, and we laugh and gossip all our way to SCL. Besides, I have a privileged view on the latest shoe and pants trends.
photo img_20170818_180337

To finish with, I find out on flightaware.com that CC-AMP has had a very interesting life. Tatarstan Air? Well, I guess that Chile and Sky Airline must sound equally exotic to Russians!
photo ccamp2

How weird. There's an easyJet in the picture. There must be a mistake.
photo info

We arrive at SCL on time, and head for our respective accommodations. Tomorrow will be a busy day, and I will get an unexpected job!

I can't complain. H2 has a record of punctuality, and now they have a great BOB menu. Fantastic for an LCC, in my pinion.

ZAL
Looks nice and well kept. No long queues. Kind staff. Saw a policeman in charge of terminal security.

SCL
Please give them some award!

    Hi Nelson,

Another great report. It’s nice to see that a LCC can offer a good service. On a recent flight with LATAM nor even water was available for purchase. The so called “Mercado LATAM” is a huge and bad joke. Have safe flights!

      Hola Rafael!

On a recent flight with LATAM nor even water was available for purchase

I'm really sorry to hear that! I also had my first experience with mercado latam not long ago... and it was a complete fiasco. Expensive, and the product I wanted was not available. :(

      Que estés bien! ^^

    Oi Nelson! Tudo bem?

"I can not believe my ears when the principal says YES, GO!!"
    - Congratulations on your free trip. What a pleasant surprise.

"Too bad the descriptions in the menu are only in Spanish"
    - Would someone sue for discrimination? :P

    "A piscola?"
    - As long as it is not a "pistola". :P

"Ah! The trolley comes at last! I gasp at the size of the sandwich."
    - I wouldn't complain. I hope you enjoyed it.

"I don't have the heart to take away from her the chance to behold the mountains that I admire so much, so I’ll make do with this little bit of snow this time."
    - You are such a gentleman. I hope your kind gesture is returned in the future. ;)

"Besides, I have a privileged view on the latest shoe and pants trends."
    - You look at the glass half full instead of half empty. I sometimes ask myself where is the glass. :P

Glad you enjoyed this trip in good company and thanks for sharing another great FR.

Oi, Adan! Tudo bem! Obrigado! :D E você?

      Congratulations on your free trip.

Thank you. I was very happy when the school approved my idea, in particular because I don't have a good relationship with the principal. I think that strategy played a role here. I approached one of the school managers first, who's very fond of me, and one of my companions also has some managerial responsibilities, so it was difficult for the principal to say no. Checkmate. :D

As long as it is not a "pistola"

Thank goodness the drink is not called Coca Tola. Then we would have a problem.

      I wouldn't complain.

Nor would I! In fact, "The bigger, the better" is one of the ruling principles of my life. Oh, my! hee hee hee.

I hope your kind gesture is returned in the future

I was, already! A young man gave me his window seat on my flight back from Camboriú during my school class trip last October! I was terribly sad because I hadn't been assigned a window seat in any of the four legs of the trip. So, that was karma at its best!

Glad you enjoyed this trip in good company

You bet! Claudia and Romina are so much fun! The three of us teach English at school. You can't get bored in their company!

Thanks for dropping by, Adan! Nos vemos! ^^

Hola Nelson! Well, I must say, this must be the first time I've seen the inside of a B.O.B. sandwich as a cover pic! Haha...bonus points to you for originality sir!

Yes, free flights are definitely the best kinds of flights! How kind of you to give the child the window seat...I think my urge to take aerials would be too strong. I would have probably crushed the poor kid leaning over from the middle seat the whole flight! haha.

Agree that the B.O.B menu looks good. Do they have hot options on longer flights or do H2 not have ovens?

Thanks for an entertaining report as always!

      Hola Kevin!

Do they have hot options on longer flights or do H2 not have ovens?

They must have an oven, because in the purple circle next to the croissant it says "Pídelo calentito!" (Order it warm!)

this must be the first time I've seen the inside of a B.O.B. sandwich as a cover pic

LOL. Just a sad copy of the covers for some F class reports. Next time I'll hold my plastic glass of Sprite against the window and pretend it's champagne. XD

Hi Nechus! What is the best way to end a difficult day at work? Read your report with unusual cover pic :) You are right, the flights paid by others are the best ones, I love the feeling when my company send me somewhere and I love it even more when I can choose the airline and nobody asks for explanations if the price is resonable. Thanks for a funny report. Have a nice day!

I think I'm building a reputation here, with cows and sandwiches.... XDDD

I love the feeling when my company send me somewhere

It's a great feeling, indeed. This was my first time. I MUST find an excuse for a second one!!

      Thanks for dropping by, Loukas!

Hey Nelson, thanks for the report.
What a nice menu! Even the actual sandwich looked tasted, which is quite rare when it comes to airplane food, you know.
Also, that Europcar ad on the window is really annoying. Is it common on Chilean airlines? This year Samsung made one in a Gol aircraft and everybody complained about it on the internet...
    Thanks again y hasta luego!

No. Sky is the only airline that has them so far. But there wasn't one on my window the last time I flew Sky. They were either removed by the airline or by passengers, because they are easy to peel off.
      Thanks for dropping by!! ^^
