This was a quick work trip I took back in December 2022. I usually don't do flight reports of work trips because I am both working at the airport and most the flight, but I thought it'd be interesting to review AA's domestic first class product since I am usually on United.
I came straight from working at the office to the airport, so no time to waste. I would be flying on N577NN today, a 7-years old CRJ-900LR.
Boarding began at 2:30pm.
AA's regional carriers, like its competitors, have a 1-2 configuration in first class on these regional jets.
These seats are similar to the ones United has on its regional jets, but I think AA's seats appear marginally newer and a bit sleeker?
Plenty of leg room for an average guy like me and I like the larger mini-tray for drinks.
We pushed back at 3pm ET and took off at 3:23pm. Service began 12 minutes after takeoff with drink orders. I asked for sparkling wine (since I assumed it wasn't actually champagne onboard), but I think the FA misheard me and served me both still and sparkling water.
There was a choice of a protein or veggie box for the main . . . I was not expecting a worse catering situation than on United.
This sandwich was honestly disgusting. I took a bite, waited a bit, and then tried a second bite before giving up.
I asked for some wine to wash it down (this time I said champagne to avoid any confusion). Overall, she was very friendly and proactive about refills. After she collected the lunch boxes, she offered us snacks from a basket (I opted for a bag of chips, not pictured).
I didn't measure things, but are the lavatory on the CRJ-900 marginally larger than the ones on ERJ-175s? I kind of felt that way, but otherwise, this was a fairly standard regional jet lavatory.
It was a fairly uneventful flight, though when I tried to check the in-flight streaming service on my phone, I couldn't get anything to play after the ads. So all I could do was watch the same Marriott ad over and over again. Talk about being Bonvoy'ed.
We landed at 4:50pm and was at the gate a few minutes later.
Lounge: N/A
Cabin & Seat: AA's CRJ900s are fairly comfortable with 1-2 seating in first class. There isn't much to differentiate them with United's regional jets.
Service: The FA was friendly and proactively offered refills several times.
Meal & Catering: I hate to say it, but the meal was disgusting. I didn't expect the catering to be this bad. Maybe I should complain less about United's catering woes?
Bottom Line: I don't know what was wrong with the streaming on this flight, but it was an otherwise reasonable flight to New Orleans. AA's schedule is better than United's for directs from DC to New Orleans (and out of DCA as opposed to IAD), which is the main appeal.

This one was totally worth it!
Surprise, surprise!! lol
I thought my standards were low, but AA is giving me a run for my money!
It's much the same boxed meal I got on AR's Y some years ago!
Luckily the gorgeous views like that in the last picture made up for the lack of entertainment. And the seats and legroom look more... F-ish.
Thank you very much for sharing!
Don't worry, it gets worse the next flight, haha.
Looks like you hit one of the best - just afraid that other reviews won't be better though... Future will tell.
Hope you liked it in NOLA. Looking forward to reading the return leg.
