Background

It seems like all my recent flight were very last minute. This trip was mostly for avoiding the West Bengal floods and was booked just over 30 hours before departure, with no booking or even a general idea for the return flight.
This flight was booked for around ₹4,800/$58 on the Air India website, an extremely reasonable price especially for such a last minute ticket. Originally it was meant to be Vistara on the 23rd morning but that suddenly went way up in price, then the next plan was Air India nonstop or Air India Express via Bhubaneswar, both the same morning, but those also shot up, so it was this or a later Air India flight.
Akasa Air also flies on the route but at terrible times and IndiGo I will always avoid. Neither of them were significantly cheaper and overall this AI flight was the best.
My post-COVID flight stats make this my 6th domestic flight in India after the pandemic and my second on Air India. It's also tied India and  South Africa for the country with my second most domestic flights, overtaking Australia but still far behind the US. Kolkata is my most flown airport at 12 flights including this one, ahead of Johannesburg at 10 and Perth at 9. Including this flight, it's my 4th flight to or from Mumbai. This is my 30th Star Alliance flight, 6th Air India Group/Vistara flight, 35th Airbus flight, 25th A320 family flight, and 4th A320neo flight (all the stats are post-COVID).
Usually I would publish a routing here but I have no idea what my next flight will be.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport

Kolkata Airport is named after Subhas Chandra Bose, an Indian nationalist and leader of the Indian National Army, which cooperated with Japan and Nazi Germany in order to gain Indian independence from the United Kingdom. It's called CCU because the spelling of Kolkata used under the British Raj was Calcutta.

Air India's new colors and designs are everywhere.

Because it was barely an hour before departure all the passengers on this flight were being taken to the front of the line which was very helpful. Check-in was very fast because of this.

photo img_0034

There was a long line in security but the flight had gotten delayed so there was some extra time. Boarding started at the normal time though, so by the time I went downstairs to the gate the buses were already filling.

Planespotting & Boarding

The bus let me get some pictures of the aircraft on the ground in CCU. Most the planes were just the normal domestic narrowbodies, but, very interestingly, there was an Air India 787-8 at the far side of the tarmac, nowhere near the terminal (they don't usually fly widebodies into CCU) and something I've never seen in CCU before, an Air France (cargo?) widebody. Neither of these showed up on Flightradar so I'm not sure what the story is with them.

Today's aircraft is VT-RTO, a 0.9 year old A320neo delivered to Air India in November 2023. It is one of the newer planes in the Air India fleet. I was able to get a lot of pictures of it from the bus…

…and during the long, long line for boarding.

I also got a couple of pictures of the AF plane and the AI 787.

photo img_0057

There were a few local A320s around us as well

And finally, boarding

Seat & Departure (+ more planespotting)

All-economy configuration in this A320neo. With the ongoing refurbishment of Air India's narrowbody fleet, I assume that business and premium economy will be added and the livery will be changed. The cabin is in good condition, though, it won't actually need a retrofit for a few years.

photo img_0076photo img_0077photo img_0078

Everything was in very good condition. The aircraft is of course less than a year old but I was still a bit uncertain about what the state of the cabin would be.

photo img_0079

There are two annoying things. One is that there isn't really a headrest.
(Interestingly, this design is one of the few things that still has the old AI logo)

photo img_0082

The other is that the armrest is quite small.

photo img_0117

To be honest I barely noticed either of these things during the flight, it wasn't really a big deal.
There were two charging points for every row of three which was a nice surprise.

photo img_0084

There is also a device holder, cupholder, tray table, and two storage compartments, one for "literature" and one normal one.

photo img_0086photo img_0091

Individual lights and air vents.

photo img_0085

The seatback pocket contains a sickness bag, a safety card - unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of the inside of it but it was one of the very few airline safety cards that actually had images that made sense, and the new Namaste.ai magazine which I looked through while we were waiting… it was quite a long wait.

photo img_0088photo img_0089photo img_0090

There seemed to be a few interesting articles but I didn't read any of them, I just looked at the information page at the end of the magazine.

A bit more planespotting while we keep waiting

And finally we pushed back.

They turned on orange and purple lighting

We went past the terminal before taking off around 40 minutes late

Meal & In-flight

Beautiful sky this afternoon

photo img_0122photo img_0123

Air India provides complimentary meals on all flights in all classes, although on flights under two hours they give snack boxes.
Only, it's not that simple.
Air India has different meal services depending on the time of day:

photo meals

So unfortunately the normal hot meal service wasn't there on this flight, instead there was a "refreshment" served.

photo img_0124

On one hand, this was quite disappointing. I had looked at their website before the flight and I knew that we were meant to be served refreshments, but I'd been hoping that there would still be a proper meal service. Air India usually has great meals and this little box was underwhelming.
But to be fair to them, any service on a short domestic flight, especially with a ticket that costed less than $60, is great. Also, non special meals had two boxes, one with the main snack and one with some sides. I believe the options were a vegetarian or non-vegetarian sandwich with 2-3 sides, which is quite reasonable. Unfortunately with the special meal there was only this:

photo img_0125

They were good fruits but there was nothing else with them which was a shame.
Beverage service started after the refreshments but there was a bit of turbulence so the crew had to stop for a while. Eventually they restarted. The options were tea, coffee, and water - not much of a selection. I got water.

photo img_0127

The man serving my side of the plane was very friendly and when asked if there was any way to get the extra stuff that non special meal passenger had gotten he said the meals are calculated before the flight but he would try. A few minutes later his colleague came back with not one but two snack boxes (I only had one). This was very nice of them, I really appreciated it.

photo img_0128photo img_0129

One of the fanciest looking cutlery packets I've seen:

photo img_0130

The sandwich was simple, just bread and cheese. It was nice but a bit dry. The mango yogurt was really good, I could have had a couple more.

photo img_0131

I used the bathroom once during the flight, it was cleaner than I'd expected. As I was waiting for the beverage carts to pass by I noticed the coffee jug seemed to be from Vistara.

Cabin view:

photo img_6076

The rest of the flight was uneventful.
There were some nice views of the sunset as we got closer to Mumbai. Parts of the sky were orange and red but some of it was also a very beautiful blue. The cabin also turned blue soon (but not naturally).

Arrival & Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport

There was a great sunset, and also a bit of lightning which was cool although I couldn't get pictures of it.
The orange and purple lighting was turned on again as we got closer to Mumbai.

And finally, landing. We made back some time during the flight but were still around half an hour late, not too bad.
Welcome to Maharashtra!

I didn't see any international planes sadly. Just the usual domestic aircraft. There were however a few parked Go First A320s. The lights made it hard to get good pictures of anything.
We sat next to the Alliance Air plane for a while before finally getting to our gate.

Last view of the seats:

photo img_0144

I tried to get a picture of our plane from the jetbridge but mostly failed

photo img_0145

We parked next to an Air India Dreamliner in the Star Alliance livery.

photo img_0146

It was a long, long, long, long walk to baggage claim. There was some nice artwork on the walls but I didn't get pictures of it. I was mostly focusing on the planes, but the reflections made it very hard to get pictures of that too

photo img_0147

Bags also took a while to arrive.

That concludes this report. Thanks for reading.

Conclusion

This was a good flight overall. A full meal service would have been appreciated, but the second snack box was a very nice touch. The crew were friendly if not extraordinarily so, the seat was comfortable enough and the cabin was in good condition. There was no IFE available but it wasn't necessary on this less than 3 hour flight. And of course the magazine was nice and streaming IFE is coming soon.
I would hesitate to fly Air India's narrowbodies on longer Southeast Asian routes until their streaming entertainment is rolled out, and I wouldn't fly them long haul on an aircraft with a legacy cabin, but for domestic or short haul international flights I'd happily fly with them again - especially at a time of day when they serve meals!
Air India has certainly changed under the Tatas. Maybe for the better: the cabin wasn't falling apart, the crew were nice, the flight wasn't that late...
But I can't help but miss the old Air India. Not just the full meal service but the whole experience - it felt very different to this flight, though not necessarily better. It felt like the Indian flag carrier, like an airline with a historic past. It felt almost majestic even on short flights, flying Air India (at least for me - and I'm definitely in the minority here) was an exciting experience, even through their most troubled times.
I think there is one thing that really encapsulates this: the absence of the Maharaja. The once iconic symbol of Air India was nowhere to be seen on this flight. Air India feels almost like a different airline that shares a name with its predecessor. And so, as it continues with its Vihaan.ai transformation plan, improving its product, expanding, and moving forward, while it'll certainly get better, there's a part of me that longs for Air India's former days.

  • The cabin is in good condition, though, it won't actually need a retrofit for a few years.

It's incredible how much more modern the cabins are on these new All-Economy A320neos vs the original 2-Cabin neos AI operate. Nice to see USB finally flying (along with the new 3-cabin Neos). Looks like it will be hit or miss for a few years.

It's funny how much more modern the seats look when looking forward rather than looking towards the back because the seat cover material is that same old pattern that just makes it look old even if it's brand new.

The meal looks great and really helps make it a pleasant experience. The only thing missing is some streaming IFE. I assume they'll be rolling that out at some point since both sister airlines AIX and Vistara have streaming IFE.

    Thanks for sharing!

    • Yeah they are very modern indeed. They recently started narrowbody refurbishment so the whole A320 fleet should be updated.

It's true, the seat cover is the only thing with the old design and yeah it does look very different depending on the angle.

They recently added streaming IFE on widebodies, it'll be coming soon for the narrowbody fleet

      Thanks for reading!

  • I do agree with your sentiment. The old Air India had a charm, if they only maintained their cabins, they could still be outstanding. Their older seats have incredible seat pitch and footrests, something very rare in economy, and the bright red and crimson seats looks unique. The modern seats look fine but they are by no means outstanding in any way and the new livery looks a bit bland especially with the lack of the Mughal style arches around the window.

    • I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way! It's true, the footrests and legroom will both disappear as they refurbish the fleet. And yeah, the new brand and product and all isn't bad in any way, but it lacks the charm of the old Air India

  • Thanks for sharing this FR. The seat design is actually quite good with the device holder having built in cup holder and the charging ports, but the upholstery just makes it look dated (same issue with a lot of Chinese carrier color palettes). That is a really confusing route map in the in-flight magazine. They show routes to SFO and YVR going both directions. Clearly still a lot of untapped potential for AI, Wi-Fi and streaming would definitely be large steps forward.

    • It is a good design overall, and the seats will probably get changed over the coming months as they refurbish the fleet.

I didn't notice that on the route map!

I'm not sure if they're allowed to have wi-fi on domestic flights, but streaming IFE is coming soon

  • Hey there, fellow Kolkata-bashi (vaasi)! As someone who was born there, with most of my extended family in CCU, I consider myself lucky for not having to call its very underwhelming state-run airport my home.

Now of course I live in Singapore, and my family in Bengaluru, but for most of my life I had to endure the gloominess that is Chennai Airport, so seeing a review from fellow struggling airport Kolkata hits differently!

Loved your Bhutan Airlines report, and now it's nice to see what Air India's latest crop of A320neos look like. I really like the refreshed safety cards, but most of the other things, from the dated upholstery to the complete lack of entertainment, are a letdown… but at least it wasn't as horrible as my recent report on the Air India A320neo from Singapore to Delhi, where there was absolutely NO sign of any improvement by the Tatas!

something I’ve never seen in CCU before, an Air France (cargo?) widebody. Neither of these showed up on Flightradar so I’m not sure what the story is with them.

This was F-GSPU, a 777-200ER that had diverted to CCU on 13 September when flying from Paris to Ho Chi Minh City, and stayed at CCU until the 26th. (https://x.com/bengalwithrohit/status/1835676839223689588)

one of the very few airline safety cards that actually had images that made sense, and the new Namaste.ai magazine

Sadly, I received nothing of the kind on AI’s older A320neo back in February, with ancient safety cards and no magazine — though I remembered to pinch one from the first row. But flying the AI A350 later that week was a ***quantum leap forward*** in every way imaginable! You can check out my recent report of the AI A350 from Bengaluru to Mumbai for more details.

They were good fruits but there was nothing else with them which was a shame.

In the end, it turns out there was a whole lot else to go with those good fruits. 😇 Special praise for the flight attendant who handed out that snack box with ‘aam doi’ (mango yoghurt) and sandwich, a big step-up from those poor fruits!

I hope such above-and-beyond service continues from Air India after Vistara ceases to exist. Much like Jet Airways, and Kingfisher before it, every Indian who’s had the pleasure of flying Vistara will miss it dearly and badly for years to come. But you never know what IndiGo, the giant of Indian aviation, has up its sleeve in terms of a premium product.

Dekha hobe, bhai (see you, brother) and happy travels!

  • Thanks so much for the comment!

CCU is indeed one of my two home airports. It's definitely not as nice as DEL or BOM (I haven't been to BLR) but it's not too bad either.

Yeah I think in the few months between our flights some changes have been implemented, other than the seats everything inside the plan is very much new Air India. The magazine did say streaming IFE is coming soon and it's already been added on the widebodies so I'm looking forward to that.

Ok, F-GSPU, that's what it was! I couldn't find it on flightradar so thanks for sharing, do you know why the AI 787 was there?

Yep, their product is definitely very different across the fleet, in the coming months (or years maybe) it should slowly standardize. The A350 flight looked great although you should add that it's premium eco and not economy!

It was really nice of them to bring the second snack box, I though it would be worth asking but I didn't really expect to actually get it, I definitely appreciated that a lot.

Hopefully Air India becomes more like Vistara after the merger, and luckily their aircraft and crew will sill be around. IndiGo's "business class" looks pretty poor compared to Vistara/Air India's, and while their prices are definitely premium, nothing else is!

    Thanks for reading!
