Glasgow to barra. loganair on the dhc 6 twin otter
Flight routing
- 1Barra to Glasgow
- 2Glasgow to Barra
Always wanting to tick this trip off; flying from Glasgow to Barra in the Outer Hebrides.
Took advantage of Loganair's advertised £75 day trip. I was unable to book this offer on their website and had to call their call centre which was handled easily enough with very helpful staff who found a selection of dates for the offer.
Arrived at Glasgow airport with plenty of time to play with and feeling pretty excited. I could see on Flight Radar that the aircraft for today's outbound flight would be G-BVVK, a 41 year old DHC-6-300 built in February 1980, Serial Number 666….?
Interestingly, we had a slight delay prior to boarding - ground staff advised of bad weather however the pilots were happy to go…they also suggested everyone used the bathroom prior to boarding due to the expected bad weather. As expected, there are no toilets (or cabin crew) onboard this aircraft for the ~1 hour flight to Barra.
Climbing the steps to the cramped cabin.
Boarding complete. View from Seat 4A, open flight deck too providing some nice views along the route!
Rotating from Runway 23 within a matter of seconds.
KLM 737 pushing back for Amsterdam. Pity we were too early for an aerial shot of the EK 77W…
Above the clouds.
View looking back from 4A.
Flightdeck view en route. The cabin was really noisy with a fair bit of vibration for the duration but all added to this unique experience.
Beginning our descent and approach for my first ever beach landing. Thankfully, the weather along the route was not as bad as we were initially advised ?
Landed….what an amazing experience!
Views as we leave G-BVVK…
Due to the delay, we had just over an hour prior to the flight back to Glasgow and wandered directly across the road, over the hills for some stunning views from Barra…
Thanks for this Review, 75£ is definitely worth a day trip on this classic flight.
The beach landing gotta be amazing.
This flight has been on my bucket list for so long, but unfortunately haven't had the time myself to accomplish it as of yet. Thanks for sharing this unique report and for that price it was definitely worth it.
Cool Report! This flight should be on every AvGeek's bucket list, right up there along with getting jetblasted at SXM!
Thanks for sharing the experience with those of us who haven't been able to do it yet!
Thanks Kevin, that reminds me, I have a trip report to post from SXM
