My first report here! Please feel free to give my advice on ways to improve!

This is the first leg to my destination of Rome.

Don't think I really need to elaborate much on Changi Airport though after departing from Terminal 3 for my previous flights on Singapore Airlines, you can really tell that Terminal 1 is aging. The self check-in system and baggage drop was pretty okay though I prefer the regular way of checking in my bags.

Here's the beauty flying me today. It was a REALLY full flight as the flight on the previous night had been cancelled due to technical issues so many passengers were pushed to this flight(both passengers to AMS from Bali and Singapore). There seemed to be quite a few connecting passengers from Garuda as well. The security screening line was extremely long and the departure lounge seemed to a tad too small to accommodate all the passengers full.

Last view of the plane from the outside in Singapore!

Boarding the plane!

photo IMG_0531

A view of the inside of the cabin. It's huge! The aisles are really small though. If you're pulling your carry-on, you're going to have a bad time. I guess that's what happens when airlines squeeze 10-abreast in Y on a 777, something's got to give.

photo IMG_0533

A picture of me in the seat. I'm 5'11 so seat ptich at 31 was abit on the small side. Seat width was 17 was reasonable though a little more would have been more nice. The seats were pretty hard, not comfortable but tolerable. A pillow and blanket was placed on each seat prior to boarding. Seat recline was good, better than I expected. IFE had a good selection on recent movies, television programs and games. The system wasn't very responsive though. Not too sure of it was just my handset or the system in general. Also the screen's brightness was too bright for me even at the lowest setting. The result was me watching washed out movies the entire flight. Also, I was pretty disappointed at the lack of a footrest, those are the best thing you can get on a long flight.

photo IMG_0535

Seat with pillow and blanket still on.

photo IMG_0536

Close-up of IFE system. I like that the headphone jack was in front of my seat and not at the armrest. My personal preference.

photo IMG_0540

Safety Video.

photo IMG_0541

Flight information. I like how KLM did their own version of the interface instead of using the usual one used on every other airline.

photo IMG_0543photo IMG_0544

Drinks service and a hot scented towel.

photo IMG_0545

The cabin crew attending to my aisle. He was polite but pretty robotic in service.

photo IMG_0549

The first meal was served within 90 minutes of taking off or somewhere above Penang. Two options for mains, Rice with Bok Choy & Black Bean Chicken or Lasagna. Other courses included a spiced cucumber salad, almond cake, water, a hot roll and cheese. Opted for Heineken as my drink. Dutch beer on a Dutch plane!

photo IMG_0547

Picture of the Lasagna. It's pretty darn good for airplane food.

photo IMG_0550

Very tasty and piping hot. Just the way I like it.

photo IMG_0548

Cucumber salad was tasty as well though a bit too much water had leaked out from the cucumbers. There was a mayo-water soup at the bottom.

photo IMG_0551

Worst item. The almond cake was too dry. Almost like eating sand.

photo IMG_0556

Mid-flight snack! The famous Stroopwafels. So. Good. Not even kidding.

No menu cards were given. All of the information could be found in the IFE.

photo IMG_0563

Obligatory toilet visit. Clean and spartan. Not much in terms of amenities.

Spent most of the flight alternating between movies and naps. Managed to watch a total of four movies, Lucy, Divergent, The Maze Runner and The Queen. Experienced minimal turbulence during the flight and it was pretty uneventful. Snacks and drinks were freely available to the passengers on a self-service cart. Snacks included crackers, hazelnut cereal bars, chocolates and sweets. Drinks were juices, carbonated beverages and water.

photo IMG_0569

Breakfast service commenced as soon as we entered into Europe!

photo IMG_0568

Serving breakfast. Also, there was a hot towelette service again! Nice touch by KLM to help wake the passengers up.

photo IMG_0570

One option for breakfast. Main consisted of Hash Brown, chicken sausage, omelette and some tomato sauce thing. Fresh fruits and berry yoghurt also served with water and condiments.

photo IMG_0573

Beginning our descent into Amsterdam.

photo IMG_0577

Landing into a cold, wet Schiphol. The landing was pretty hard. I guess the pilots wanted to make sure the plane broke the water on the surface of the runway.

photo IMG_0580

Disembarking the plane.

photo IMG_0581

Maybe next time…

I shall end this review with a couple of shots of Schiphol. Didn't leave much of an impression. It was really old and there was quite a fair bit of renovation work going on.

Conclusion

My experience onboard was fairly pleasant but the 777-300ER at full capacity on KLM was really a squeeze. In my opinion, the food served was excellent though the service was pretty robotic. Didn't really feel welcomed by the cabin crew. Still, I would definitely fly with KLM again given the chance. I hope to try their new economy class as well!

Thanks for sharing this report with us.
    It's very detailed and interesting.
The cabin looks very cramped and unfortunately , more and more airlines, squeeze 10 seats abreast the B777.
I am surprised in a positive way by the catering which looks good an impression that your comments confirm.
Too bad the crew just did the job and did not try to interact more with passengers.
Looking forward to your future reports.

Thanks for tais report. Nice KLM flight.
About SCHIPHOL Airport, it's sure if you compare it than CHANGI, it seems older but some surveys gives its the award of Best European Airport

Welcome and thank you for sharing this first report.

KL is a solid choice when flying in Y and the little touches like hot towels, snack and decent meals contribute to make the experience more tolerable.

Thanks for sharing, great and complete Flight Report. A small thing though, next time, flush the toilet before taking the picture :)

Everything is narrow in the infamous 3-4-3 seat layout of AF/KL's 777s. The IFE screen looks as small as those of AF.
It would be better to have the caption before (on top of) the pictures, rather than below like on printed matter.
This is nevertheless an excellent first report, with a comprehensive photographic coverage and narrative.

Thanks for sharing this first report with us! Lots of good details and pleasant to read. 3-4-3 config on a 777 is so tight. The few times I've done it, I can still remember the backaches, LOL. As Marathon pointed out having the text above the picture works better for this side--aside from that, great first report! Looking forward to the next reports!

Thanks for sharing your first FR and welcome aboard

It's pleasant to read and comprehensive report

The cabin looks so tighs with all these seats !

Picture of the Lasagna. It's pretty darn good for airplane food.
You had certainly low expectations and/or you are not familiar with Italian food ;)

Some people are crazy of the KL snacks : it's only junk food in my opinion

    The breakfast looks decent

I shall end this review with a couple of shots of Schiphol. Didn't leave much of an impression
Of course Changi Airport is way above Schiphol airport :)
